Planning today's creative writing lesson in the bookstore where I wrote this found poem. Something magical about found poetry, the convergence of words in the wild to make extra meaningful meaning. Can't wait to see what my middle schoolers come up with today. rebeccadmartin.substack.com/p/found

Document 0 / Writer 1
Writing fantasy that uses Welsh names and words = document shouting loud red and blue squiggly lines at me. Mistake mistake mistake! No, I smile. I know exactly what I'm doing. #amwriting #amwritingfantasy #YAfantasy #Welshlanguage #Welsh

The teens I write with on Saturdays are so bought into their creative ideas. They develop plot & characters & magical giftings with the gusto of humans who haven't yet learned to fit in above all else AND IT WORKS. I tell you, write fantasy with teenagers. It will change you. #amwriting #teenwriters

A small, sweet, brave essay of mine has gone live today, but I'm not yet ready to share it with People Who Might Know Me . . . but I also want the warm comfort of hearts and way-to-go's and "Beautiful!" Online high fives will be received at this time☺️

I got to spend this afternoon workshopping with three teenage writers. Guys, the future of writing is bright with creativity, critical thinking, and generosity of spirit. Look for phenomenal new books in the next five-ten years! #writing #writingworkshops #taketeenagersseriously

I'm overhearing my husband explain my book writing and editing process to his brother on the phone, and he just called beta readers "Super Readers." I like that. I like it. #amwriting #ameavesdropping #betareaders = superheroes?

A beautiful essay by @kelliedbrown1.bsky.social :
"The roots of this practice may have come from Celtic mythology, which claimed that bees helped humans connect with the spirit world, and so those needing to get a message to the dead could use the bees as their interlocutor."

Some days, you rewrite the first chapter of your novel--and you feel really, really good about it. #amwriting #yalit #killyourdarlings

A SACRAMENT

Become that high priest,
the bee. Drone your way
from one fragrant
temple to another, nosing
into each altar. Drink
what's divine
and while you're there,
let some of the sacred
cling to your limbs.
Wherever you go
leave a small trail
of its golden crumbs.

Okay y’all. I’ve been derelict. Publication is one week from today! Pre-order code should still be good (15PRE for 40% off). Tried to write it clearly enough that if you have a hangover from Saturday it will still make sense.

Folks, celebrate your friends. I know you probably know this, but it's easy to forget. Take joy in their successes and cheer on their moments in the sun, and always let them know they make your life better. It matters.

Doing the first big picture read through of my just-finished novel manuscript. Both loving and hating it and wondering if I can cut the entire first chapter. #amwriting #writingislife #writingisbananas

Doing my annual September #Tolkien reread, as I do, while also having lost my head and trying to move to a ridiculously shambling 1870 house with no plumbing and I'm feeling this old essay of mine hard: www.curatormagazine.com/rebeccamarti...
Shire Reckonings
Like Frodo on that first and only night in his Crickhollow house, I look around this temporary place and say with some effort, “This does look like home.” I try to mean it.
