*Atmospheric Optics*

‘C’ is for cloud iridescence. This colourful optical phenomena appears on clouds close to the Sun or Moon. It’s caused by diffraction (small water droplets or ice crystals scatter the light) and is also called irisation, after the Greek goddess of rainbows, Iris.
Cloud iridescence seen above winter trees. The area of cloud closest to the Sun is coloured like mother-of-pearl. (Cloud iridescence is seen in Nacreous clouds too, also called Polar Stratospheric Clouds, but these need very particular conditions to form, so are far rarer.) Photograph by Kerrie Ann Gardner.

There are two major types of owls: Barn owls, Tytonidae, with their heart-shaped faces like the one on top, and true owls, Strigidae, on the bottom of the image.

These differences are more than superficial; They are different in vocalization, behaviour, and habitat preferences.
