it is unclear if the other Hot Milk is still using that name, neither they nor their label have a wikipedia page, and idk how to make a search engine give me results for "hot milk but not that one." amazon music says they have "10+ followers." 10+ is how an annoying person says 11

i think i inadvertently subscribed to updates from licorice dot com while looking up facts about sixlets and now licorice dot com is in my inbox saying "hey man we're out of shit to tell you about licorice. you should try getting into better treats. you try cookies yet? oh man. cookies, bro."

a still from my vod of a link to the past randomizer race. we have to find items, but because we're playing zelda, we also have to find bombs, which you think would be easily available for purchase, but today the game was randomized in such a way that bomb shops were not easily available early, and evidently my opponent had a devil of a time finding bombs, whereas the game saw fit to bless me with single-bomb drop after single-bomb drop. he did not seem thrilled to have been on the short side of this particular stick. this particular shot is of my getting my first bomb of the seed. not pictured is the screen below this one, which contained three items locked behind a bombable wall, one of which made the game substantially faster. there's a lot of lore here, the alt text is meant to promote accessibility, but we're really testing the limit of how accessible an image can be with this one. zelda's in black-and-white and i'm a penguin, just roll with it, there's so much context that won't fit here bros and broettes

i am a loyalty member at the theater nearest to me, which loyalty program offers free size upgrades on soda as a perk. However, there are only two sizes on offer: small (16-ish ounces, a reasonable size, more than a can but not too much to drink across a 140-minute movie) and large (literally like a liter and a half). So I order the small, but because I'm a loyalty member, the cashier assumes I must want the large, so they give me the large, and like look at this fucking thing. It's enormous. I've included several objects for comparison. This is the biggest thing on earth. And they want me to drink this during Eddington. I can't do it no human can do it this is a goddamn impossible amount of Diet Coke. and then i only got 1/4 of the way through my literal fucking pile of Diet Coke, but I'm not gonna throw this much soda into a trash can, so I'm taking this bad boy with me on a seven-block walk through Uptown. i can barely even carry this thing with one hand, and my hands are relatively small (a gripe for many other days) so I'm walking holding this unreasonable item over my heart with two hands like I'm requesting more gruel from the gruelman but I'm not it's the opposite please sirs I want some less. they have to stop doing this to me. I ordered a small. Words have meaning. I cannot take the size increase. It's not free, I know this because I just told you the very real cost. "small/large" no that is inaccurate sizing it's "refreshing treat/the burden of all man's sins." i'm waking up tomorrow and reading this post and thinking, yep, they sure did give me several caffeine

Whisper of the Heart: #1's a tough call between the top 3, ultimately going with the one that makes me feel warmest when i think about it Spirited Away: banger, saw this as a lot of people's token animated feature on their nyt lists and can't really disagree The Wind Rises: i think i'm in the minority having it this high but idk i think it's a fascinating movie to consider in the wake of the ai thing Princess Mononoke: if i saw this when i was 10 i'm a different dude today My Neighbor Totoro: a sweet movie and a big honkin' guy Kiki's Delivery Service: was surprised by how much i remembered after watching it once when i was like 10 Kaguya: maybe the most beautiful thing i've ever looked at, movie itself leans to the whatever side (WE GET IT TAKAHATA THE FOREST RULES THE CITY DROOLS WE GEEEEEEEET IIIIIII*T*) Castle in the Sky: a rip-roaring good time, that scene where the pirates gawk at the tween took me out of it a lil tho My Neighbors the Yamadas: really loved lil girlie getting lost in the mall, rest of the movie is fine but doesn't keep that energy Red Turtle: i dug it! it's good Howl's Moving Castle: curious to rewatch 'cuz the more i think about it the more it clicks Grave of the Fireflies: i may have over-intellectualized this one, this is a film with A Reputation and i spent most of the watch with my guard extremely up Only Yesterday: as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about sixth grade i'm not sure why i didn't connect with this more Ponyo: cutie :) Boy & the Heron: i was with it until the himbo parakeets showed up, after that it's kinda just a cascade of imagery Porco Rosso: man i tried to get it Nausicaa: it's a good movie there's just better versions of it Arrietty: sweet, slight Marnie: kind of a snoozer ngl Poppy Hill: ew Tales from Earthsea: ya by numbers Pom Poko: nightmare parade is sick, the raccoons were annoying and i hated their visible ballsacks The Cat Returns: too silly Ocean Waves: guys being dudes? first five out: Moonlight, May December, In the Loop, The Farewell, Superbad 10) Wolfwalkers: gorgeous, first watch was on my laptop and the only thing i wanted to do after was watch it on a bigger screen, frankly unjust that a film this good went straight-to-streaming in 2020 9) Forgetting Sarah Marshall: wanted one comfort food pick on this list and i kinda regret not going Superbad what with the Russell Brand of it all but y'know what it isn't Superbad i watched six nights in a row after my most recent move 8) A Separation: this is why i wanted a comfort food movie on the list 7) No Country for Old Men: just rewatched a couple of weeks ago. "fixin' to do somethin' dumber'n hell, but i'm gonna do it anyway," god bless 6) Lady Bird: laurie metcalf, like bro 5) Mad Max: Fury Road: i remember not wanting to see this because i'm not an action boy and didn't know anything about the series, friend talked me into it and it knocked me on my ass 4) Children of Men: great film, spent most of senior high feeling oh-so-cool because me and my subscribed-to-Entertainment-Weekly ass could list an Obscure Smart People Film as one of my favorites 3) The Worst Person in the World: my brother-in-law and i share i think five 5-stars on letterboxd and this is one and i think part of it's because Julie kinda looks like my younger sister and we both want her to be happy 2) Poor Things: near the end, when Bella says "Bella is happiest when she is with you," and then they cut to Ramy Youssef smiling sweetly, and then they cut to the duck quacking? that's the perfect joke. that's the best joke in all movies 1) Adaptation.: this is the first time i've ever noticed the period in the title and now i feel like a poseur

i went to look up mr. brightside on wikipedia because the band in the mr. brightside video is The Genius Sex Poets but i thought it was called The Jealous Sea Lions so i wanted to confirm if there was a second version of the video they had to make because America got really fucking weird over Nipplegate and The Genius Sex Poets was considered to risqué to air on Viacom properties. and like i've always been fascinated by The Jealous Sea Lions as the name of a fake band, because The Killers quite famously named themselves after a fake band in a New Order video, and sure OK dozens of bands that never made it big named themselves The Killers for any number of other reasons, it's not a tremendously original name, but still it was an important part of The Killers' lore, that they saw The Killers printed on a fake band's bass drum and rolled with it, and so i'm sure they were mindful of the idea that, when they put a fake band for their own video, kids all over the world might take inspiration from them and use that fake band name as their own, which is to say, i was always surprised they went with The Jealous Sea Lions as the fake band name because no one is naming their band that no one is ever naming their band that my god Brandon how could you be so cavalier with your legacy, but now? now that i know the band name was The Genius Sex Poets? THAT'S EVEN WORSE! THAT IS SOMEHOW A MUCH WORSE NAME FOR A BAND THAN THE JEALOUS SEA LIONS, WHICH ALREADY SUCKED MONDO ASS! it's another example of gen x knowing they had an opportunity to leave a better world for future generations and 360 slam-dunking it into the dumpster. anyway i just realized wikipedia listed mr brightside over mr. brightside because i didn't type the . and it's giving me the closest match, but i already wrote all this alt text, so. ya know

adding a top five for the year so far, even though we're not at the halfway point i've hit a point where the #1 is a film which i'm happy to put in the top slot and everything in the top five is Legit even if there's a couple i can't imagine will be close to the top five come March
1) Lost in Starlight: I've been watching one new-to-me anime film a week this year just to expand my familiarity with the genre, it's been fun but I was so happy to see one about adults dealing with adult shit. Really cool style, sequence near the end is unforgettable (when the mom calls for the daughter and the little girl comes running out of the daughter, aaaaaaaaa). A stellar addition to the canon of Straight-To-Streaming Animated Features I Promise Are Good, Actually, Please Do Not Lose Them In The Churn. Warfare: Has stayed with me a lot longer than I thought it would, never felt jingoistic or indulgent, just felt like a harrowing day on the job. Sound design, babyyyyy!!! Grand Theft Hamlet: If you watch only one documentary filmed in Grand Theft Auto V about two actors' attempt to put on a production of Hamlet in the GTAV world whilst stuck in COVID lockdowns, make it Grand Theft Hamlet. I thought it was really sweet, it made me laugh a whole lot, and I like a look into what drives people to form/join online communities that doesn't end in tragedy. Sinners: I liked but didn't love it, I think it's a remarkable film and I'm thrilled that we all seemed to dig it, but I'ma be real I was struggling to connect with it for the first hour or so. That might be my fault tho, I think I went in expecting something that this wasn't, and once I adjusted those expectations I had a good time, might rewatch but for now am OK with it here. The Colors Within: OK if I'd known you could start a band by just holding an instrument near someone and declaring "WE'RE IN A BAND" high school would've gone so much differently. Heard about Naoko Yamada earlier this year from an AV Club article and am happy to have become familiar with her work, even if this one is a little slight compared to her first two features. (Liz and the Blue Bird in particular had me reeling, that nails teen anguish over a crush so hard I was listening to Straylight Run for like two days after I watched it.)

saw a billboard for HAIRBALL XXV and i need to ask, if the members of HAIRBALL XXV are committed to accurately depicting Aerosmith, and they see this video where Stevie T hollers DREAM UNTIL YOUR BALLS TURN BLUE, do they have to have a meeting to figure out if that's the definitive lyric?

a post on my old tumblr where i congratulated Earth, the celestial body i stan, on another win in the Miss Universe pageant. i have not been keeping up with the Miss Universe pageant in the years since this was tumbld but assume it is both still extant and still giving those beautiful earth girls the tiaras they deserve. what can i say? i love earth, the planet!
