So the implications of this are kinda interesting for you baseball finance types. I’m actually kinda surprised they would even say this, because the ambiguity of what counts in what year makes it easier to tell whatever story you want to about payroll and this sorta locks them in...

He was solid, way more than people seem to think, and he got used a lot in those fringey situations. Pitching him with a 1 run deficit or 4 run lead made lots of sense and Murph did it a lot, so credit to him there. He also just pitched A TON overall.

Here it is in one chart. I decided to combine leads of 1-3 runs for simplicity sake and because those clearly aren’t the problem. Neither are ties, even if he could have maybe found ways to use some other guys in those a bit more often, it’s pretty much always justifiable to use your best guys then.

Here is Ashby, who you’ll be able to see soon has a pretty different usage pattern than the others, partly because it took him a little while to earn Murph’s trust but also because he was the only one of these guys to routinely go multiple innings. It’s kinda wild and not what I thought.

Here are the use charts for Trevor Megill, Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig and Nick Mears, who were clearly his most trusted RP for the bulk of the year. They show the inning and relative game score when they entered games. Ashby is on the next post.
