They named the Streisand Effect after me.
Anyway. I suppose the true Predators was the friends we made along the way.

Also, while Laurence Fishburne is great in anything, it's especially good seeing him play against type as an actual crazy person, rather than the level headed wise sort you're used to from things like Event Horizon, the Matrix and... wait, Ant-Man 2? He was in that? Huh.

So while there aren't THAT many Predators (alien ones at least) the stakes of the action do still feel higher. The Preds have got more interesting tactics at their disposal (and it's said that this is where they develop them), so you're not stuck just with knives and shoulder-guns the whole time.

Perhaps the core idea "Maybe man is the real Predators" isn't exactly high-concept, but it gives a fun time exploring the parallels in the behaviour of the humans with those of the Preds.

It also means that the title doesn't quite deliver if you're expecting the same Alien-Aliens escalation though.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that these dual franchises are both at their best when they're reinventing, rather than repeating.

Predators isn't exactly that, since the actual plot follows the same lines as P1, but it has new and interesting things to say about the situation, so it works.

Yup, Predators was pretty darn good. It manages to iterate and build on the formula, and explore new ways to keep the core concept fresh.

I'm not sure I ever truly bought Adrian Brody as a badass, but he's a good enough actor to work it nonetheless.

So far I'm enjoying Predators, having reached the midpoint. Seems to thread the needle of familiarity and originality pretty well, the cast is good, it's been a decent ride so far.

Can't help but feeling if this was made today it would DEFINITELY have Idris Elba in it.

1) Predator
2) Prey
3) Alien Vs Predator
4) Predator 2
5) Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem

As for AvPR, I don't think it could be saved. I do have a pitch for a future crossover though, but I'll hold that back for now.

(This is of course what Prey (mostly) does)

By making it a period piece it would help set boundaries on the story and give a better sense of vulnerability to the humans, who are less equipped and knowledgeable to deal with the insane situation they find themselves in.

Actually, a few final thoughts on the AvPs.

AvP1 would have been much more interesting if it had been set in the attack on the shaking station in 1904. You wouldn't have to change the plot much, and it would cut the need for characters to interminably explain everything to each other.

Anyway, people say that the next one, PredatorS, is decent? I like Adrian Brody, so that's a start.

Even P2 understood this, and had to sell LA as a setting for Predator murder-safari by having literal gang warfare breaking out across the city.

Here, the most interesting thing to happen is a nerd getting his keys thrown down a drain by some jocks. Woo.

Besides which the setting is just... so BORING. A big franchise crossover like this needs to up the stakes, something that the MCU proved so well. Setting your epic clash of superevolved killers in suburban Colorado is unimaginative. It's a step downwards from P1's warzone.

If your scene takes place at night, that doesn't mean you skip the lighting. It means your lighting has to work harder keeping the audience's eyes on what matters.

Only here it's just closeups of people in rubber suits gyrating in the dark.

Okay, that makes it sound like a very different film.
November 11, 2025 at 7:41 PM
It brings to mind that scene in the first Lord of the Rings film where a Black Rider is silhouetted by an eerie light at nighttime, and famously when someone questioned where the light was coming from, the terse reply was "The same place as the background music".

(it was moonlight anyway)
November 11, 2025 at 7:41 PM
For starters, it looks horrible. AvP1 was a dumb movie but at least there was some artistry in the setting and the shooting. But here? Everything's done in pitch blackness and close-up.

You never get wide shots, never get a sense of the geography of a scene, and you can't make out details anyway.

Ugh. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem is just an absolute dungheap of a film. Ugly, unpleasant, uninteresting and other words beginning with U.

Unbecoming.
Upalling.
Umbrella.

The slow pan upwards following the trail of predator blood, homaging the similar scene in P1, REALLY deserves to be in a better film.

Oh, it's just that he's dogshit at his job. Okay.
November 10, 2025 at 6:11 PM
So hang on. In AvP:R the Pred is there to clean up any traces of the xenomorphs. But when a human accidently runs into it, it still skins and hangs him upside down? For all to see?

Can he just not help himself? See a human, skin a human, just muscle memory?

Incidentally, the rankings so far are:

1) Predator
2) Prey
3) AvP
4) Predator 2

Yeah, I REALLY didn't like P2.
