All of this is why Pikmin is THE game I think of when I remember the gamecube. It's cutesy and fun like you'd expect, but the entire thing is through the lens of a sort of weary cynicism that the game wears like a badge of honor.

Metroid Prime's scanner is probably my favorite example of this, though, and they did it all in a game that largely avoids traditional storytelling methods. Just about all the information about the story and world is delivered through careful observation of key environmental details.

Breath of the Wild kind of has a "Starbucks problem" where certain landmarks like Shrines or Stables appear over and over again, like food chains. There are good mecahnical reasons for that but i always thought that open world games chip away at their own believability relying on stuff like this.

It's a tricky thing to define, but I always think about how Luigi's Mansion 3 includes a variety of locales because that's what players expect from an Adventure game, while the first game was more content to stretch one setting to it's absolute limit.
