Incredible example of how AI is destroying Google search: working on a paper on mollusk shell assemblages in Panama so I tried to search for the classic paper on the left (which I know about because I was a field assistant). Instead Google AI hallucinated a completely fictional architectural firm.

In two days I'm gonna be a published author. Feels surreal.

Reading, however slowly you do it, is thinking. And you cannot do research if you do not think.
Undergrads, I can understand.
But if a grad student uses LLMs to summarize papers, just leave, go and give the funding and space to someone who actually wants to learn something.
If you're a grad student or an undergrad interested in research I need to you listen to me very carefully.

You cannot learn to write good research papers if you do not read good research papers.

Stop asking LLMs to summarize papers for you.

Whoa, you mean the people who had serious questions about this were right to question them the entire time, and just saying "trust me bro" isn't a good response to criticism.

One of the best keynotes for any conference I've been to. If not the best.
What an excellent start to #SVP2024 - Paleontologist Dr. Brandon Kilbourne reading his poetry and reflecting on natural historians, their role in colonialism, racism, and repression, and making sure we all know and share with our students the legacy of our field. #2024SVP #Paleosky #Paleontology 🧪

Never thought I'd compliment Ohio, but at least the Cincinnati airport had a nice little "welcome to Cincinnati" sign in the airport for all the paleontologists.

Getting covid and then bronchitis just before the SVP meeting sucks, in part because I had to slow down poster design, and now I'm paying extra to get them in time.

If people are really interested in chatting about svp abstracts I will say you can chat about specifically page 414 on this post.
