Absolutely stunning & superbly rendered eagle on a 7th century Pictish symbol stone found at the Knowe of Burrian, Harray, Orkney in 1936. The stone was on a probable broch mound and was broken across the mirror symbol. At the Orkney Museum, Kirkwall. 📷 mine 2023

A rectangular carved stone with a masterfully rendered eagle at the top. A crescent & V-rod in the middle and a mirror at the bottom. The lower part of the stone is darker, where it was probably partially buried standing up when re-used at the entrance to a well. There is a break across the mirror that has been repaired with cement, and the stone was found in two pieces. Photo mine, 2023 at the Orkney Museum. This is a cartogram map of the United States depicting land use by different categories. The map distorts state shapes to represent proportional land usage. Key land use types include cow pasture/range (covering much of the central U.S.), private and federal timberland in the Pacific Northwest, corporate timberland in the Southeast, and urban housing/commercial areas in the Northeast. Other categories include agriculture (livestock feed, wheat exports, ethanol/biodiesel, cotton), protected lands (national parks, federal wilderness, state parks), and infrastructure (railroads, airports, highways). Additional specialized land uses include wildfires, golf courses, Christmas tree farms, and maple syrup production.

My photo collage shows 4 Roman clear-glass cups painted with colourful enamel-painted motifs of animals from the Roman Arena. These are known as ‘circus cups’, of which fourteen have been found in richly-furnished graves in Denmark, dated AD 200s. The top two images show two sides of the same cup. At top left a brown lion with shaggy mane, its legs outstretched as if running at full speed. On the other side of the cup at top right, is a green spotted leopard. Out of shot is a blue goat being hunted down by the lion and the leopard. Photo at bottom left shows a fragmentary glass cup decorated with a light brown lion with a shaggy mane. Cup at bottom right has an image of a gladiator and in front of him a large brown bear.
