Lover of hopeless cars and cats. Trying to be kinder every day. Leftie. Canadian who loves his nation, and has for long before the Convoyers came along. Big on real history, alternate history, anime and manga. (he/him)
Of course he knows. He is a USMC veteran, for whatever that's worth.

Heinlein really nailed it with the Fosterite Church in "Stranger in a Strange Land". The Prestonwood church could be slipped right into the Fosterite description.

Vernor Vinge's "Rainbow's End" is eerily prescient on a lot of stuff, and a good bread besides.

Re-nationalize everything that has been privatized since the 1960s. All the local and provincial energy boards. CN. Air Canada. The Canada Wheat Board.

Enact a Land Value Tax.

Reinstate the classic postwar CMHC and MURB programs as a crash development project to increase available affordable housing. Provide guaranteed zero-interest loans for municipalities to ensure adequate infrastructure, and to minimize infrastructure debt.

Abandon the Safe Third Country treaty with the US.

Eliminate the Notwithstanding Clause for most use cases.

Treat broadband internet as a public utility.

Seriously go after monopolies and duopolies. Break up Bell, Rogers, et. al.

At this point anyone would have to admit that the Starship design has some fairly fundamental flaws, and they'd be better served going back to the drawing board. The stupid Musk-induced frippery like stainless steel cladding and the "chopsticks" are useless complications

Tears for Fears' "The Hurting" and "Songs from the Big Chair", (The Hurting also goes on the Best First Album list); several Alan Parsons Project albums (thinking especially Turn of a Friendly Card); "Moon Safari" by Air; "Give Up" by The Postal Service

As the owner/driver of a tiny car, I wholeheartedly endorse this message.

For symmetry's sake, Toronto needs to trade Nylander to the Islanders, because that'd be hilarious

Apparently the autopen can be modified to fit a Sharpie.

He's a sceneryvore in the Old School sense, though. More Orson Welles than modern method.

I figured. *So* looking forward to it.

Something that occurred to me as I flew in Flight Sim over southern Cuba: in a scenario like this, what of forces overseas? How are things going in Gitmo, in Yokosuka, in Grafenwoehr, in Mildenhall? Are the Fleets steaming like hell back Stateside?

"Droud", that was the thing I was thinking of. that Louis Wu was hooked on. Tasp was the ranged version.

Outstanding work, feels *very* real. Top-notch, this.

Absolutely the endgame here.

At some point, we'll see direct brain stimulation, like Niven's "tasp". A literal pleasure machine.
November 17, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Ah, a BMW from the Before Times, when they built quality driving machines that weren't built out of plastic and literal shit.

I'm in. Where do I sign up?

Been lucky enough to have had two first-gen sporty Rabbits: a 1983 Westmoreland-built Rabbit S and a 1980 GTI. Honestly, the GTI is one of the cars I most regret selling -- not least because those Canadian-market early GTIs are worth a fortune now.
