The #MLS should get in touch with the #NSL about their heating tech for the new European aligned schedule
Ok do you see the machines next to the team benches? They look like smokers? That’s I guess for heating.

That is SO Canadian!

My crazy idea is to pull school buildings and land out of the school board’s control and place it in the city’s because communities treat these like they do their parks & rec centres anyway. The city can try to find revenue opportunities and school board can focus on education instead of facilities.
My ABC Council colleagues are vocal about pushing back on the Province downloading responsibilities onto the City, but last night they voted to build on public open space to make up for the education funding shortfall, squarely the responsibility of the Province.
Tonight the ABC majority voted to build housing on part of Fleming Elementary’s school grounds saying their hands were tied by Vancouver School Board’s decision to divest school land to build rental housing despite an outcry from the community.

Helping child number 2 study for a spelling test…

Me: “And how do you spell quarantine?”

Her: “with a big RANT in the middle”

SOOOO accurate

Langara golf course supports roughly 300 players per day. It is ~120 acres. If you convert the whole thing to soccer fields it could support 35-38 fields meaning about 11,000 people per day.

So convert the golf courses into higher capacity sports fields, lease land for housing, put in gardens

So if the property taxes don’t rise. I take that extra cash and what…pop it into the bank account, earn interest and then get taxed by a different level of government. I’d much rather park trash bins get emptied more regularly.
November 14, 2025 at 4:51 PM
I mean you can increase property taxes and still cut programs for efficiency, then with the excess build a fund/grant program for property tax relief for families that need it (over and above the deferral program) OR you can go for the political play that hurts more people than helps
Last speaker. 449: supports. People first. Not spending more but spending wisely. We see effects of inflation. Restaurants closing. Large companies downsizing. Families moving out because they can’t afford property tax. Lists a bunch of things that taxes fund.
November 14, 2025 at 1:07 AM
I mean, they still have HORSES. Of all the unnecessary city services…police HORSES still are funded.
448: homeowner. Opposed. Disappointed that taxes frozen while police increases. Focus on climate and sustainability. Chose here because it was progressive. We will be a leader once ABC is out of office. Police budget ballooned but haven’t seen results. OD deaths still rising.
November 14, 2025 at 1:01 AM
Again. People are PLEADING to be taxed MORE here.

I’m so proud of these vancouverites. No where else in the world would this happen.
334: Adam hawk. Homeowner. Proud to be part of people’s filibuster. This is ideology. Shifts costs onto those who can’t pay. Cuts to park board … received funding from TransLink for Broadway bike lane. People understand that services matter. Take 12 bucks a month from me. Political theatre.

I mean, Ken Sim as mayor has been a complete waste of time….
Ok folks we are back at it again from 1-5. Yesterday was a lot. Heard from so many passionate Vancouverites.

Unfortunately I heard the mayor say it was a waste of time. But I assure you, I’m listening.
Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.

@onecityvan.bsky.social I need you to whip up a form on your site where we can type in our property value and you tell us what our property tax increase should be based on inflation, and then a big DONATE button next to it.

Thanks.
November 13, 2025 at 8:46 PM
So ok. I’m a landlord and I rent under market at the cost of property tax and insurance. But if the rate increase by the province is set at 2% and my property taxes stays the same…

I mean how many landlords are not just going to pocket the extra?

I like the zero means zero thing less and less
November 13, 2025 at 5:48 PM
Hi! Completely ignorant person here trying to be better. Can someone explain explain what happens now?

Do the rest of the speakers still get to speak? When does the vote happen? Is someone getting Sean wrist braces for carpal tunnel?

I feel like I missed a welcome to Vancouver orientation package
We had a training session for new speakers and they asked how to follow along at work if they can’t watch livestream. I said I’d livesky (!) the meeting…
November 13, 2025 at 5:06 PM
… well I don’t know how we managed to ban plastic bags and plastic straws. But I’d really like to ban non-recyclable wrapping paper. It’s kind of the definition of single use.
This man has just described the quality that makes cities distinctive and wonderful - and he hates it.
Councillor Holyday worries about retail stores that "sell some zany thing that has very little value." He wants to know if council could define a list of what stores can sell.

Staff say they can regulate things like size, noise and property standards, but generally not what stores sell.

Even autocorrect has given up. For Fycks Sykes just let the land owners PAY MORE TAXES.

How in the world did the people come to fight city hall to get them to collect MORE taxes?

…i gotta stop ignoring my kids, good luck Vancouver
263: Shoukd be studying for finals but felt compelled. We all wabt safe and vibrant Vancouver but this isn’t it. Wants clear data. Enormous finsvisl prssyee. Fyck
November 13, 2025 at 6:01 AM
@onecityvan.bsky.social if this budget passes you guys better be ready with a social media blitz for everyone to sign up as volunteers and make donations to see change in city hall.

‘Cause I generally don’t participate, but I am MAD.

I’m going to need a rally point.
November 13, 2025 at 5:35 AM
I think it’s quite the achievement in this day and age to have somehow inspired several hundred people to talk at a city council meeting and say “I want to pay taxes, charge me more”

That… is. Quite something.
207: paying taxes is what makes city run. I don’t mind paying taxes. 210: fortunate enough to be a property owner. This is not how we create sustainable communities. Who benefits? I can guess. If you wabt revenue, install red light cameras. Integrity is on display right now.
November 13, 2025 at 5:31 AM
Ugh. Well that’s incredibly disheartening.
I thought maybe, with all that is going on, some councillors might have listened. So many people. So much time. Completely against. And just party-line it.

*sigh*
Some more charts for the Vancouver budget, a response from Ken Sim on the future of the city’s climate department, and a decision to wear a sweater on camera which I’m frankly still on the fence about
November 13, 2025 at 4:41 AM
Ok I have to put down the Vancouver politics and go back to making dinner for the kids, and driving my kid to soccer a gajillion miles away because there are no fields, and pick up my kid from music lessons because she risks her life walking home after dark on our streets…

…seems related…
November 13, 2025 at 2:12 AM
What i would say.

The decision made in council today are felt years from now and people remember those in power at that time. But you can’t etch your name on things you take away. So in 20 years what will grow that you can put your name to? If you vote for this, your names will be on the rubble.
Continuing budget hearing. Speaker 94: my love for city compels me to speak. I’m angry but also afraid. Increasingly unliveable. Decries lack of transparency. How do we know more from whistleblowers? Claiming that these aren’t cuts isn’t true. Vancouver deserves better
November 13, 2025 at 2:05 AM
So I’m just a regular person trying to be less of an idiot.

Where did this talking line come from about transparency? Also, like…this is a lot. Other than stand and be counted does this kind of talk actually change councillors minds? Or does it get decided in a meeting before this meeting?
106: calls it the peoples filibuster. Nothing to do with community care. Lays out stats of how many billionaires and centinillionaires. I never wabt to go to Chip Wilson beach or Pattinson gardens. This is a colonial firewall. This is economic small talk. This will hamper future councils.
November 13, 2025 at 1:50 AM
I remember Gregor Robertson every time I ride across the bridge. I can name each councillor who has done something that has helped in my kid’s life. The Vancouver we live in was paved by decisions made 20 years ago. What will grow from this? Nothing. And thus nothing for your names to be etched on.
63: school teacher, new father. Proud of people showing up to speak against. This is a campaign slogan. Zero means zero hope left. City manager hastily hand picked. Nobody wants to work here. No more public consultation. We will remember who made this decision.
November 13, 2025 at 12:26 AM
What I’m learning so far is people REALLY value their rec centres and investing in them would probably be a WILDLY popular idea.
57. Opposed. (All opposed so far btw). We can all feel the suffering and pain. When costs rise we rely more on public services not less. Where will money come from? Firing staff, raising fees, etc. can we acknowledge how ridiculous this is? Why aren’t you listening to us?
