lil level design thing: I didn't like how these two walls met at their corners, felt thin / weak / implausible? but no room left to resize anything seriously... took me a while to realize I could just thicken the facade with beefy columns, also win some continuity across the facade too

still thinking about this lol. his cheek skin actually doesn't protrude / stretch out much (because why would a typical face rig need that?) and his (weird?) index finger pose even hides the pinch point ... the bounce is very cartoony to "sell" the pinch?
November 2, 2025 at 11:03 PM
more seriously though maybe it's actually not too hard to hand animate the cheek blend like this? hmm

just learned “glitch” comes from Yiddish + 1940s radio culture en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glitch?...

hand modeled a tree out of brushes (it was painful) but I think the level needs the visual contrast, maybe needs some shrubs too

silent cartographer discourse made me quadruple the map size into a giant island thing. only the beachhead has a near-final flow so far, still trying to resolve the rest of it

to be fair, Louis Kahn came up with it like 60 years ago!

it was a bit painful to build the trim and align the textures, but now I can just copy and paste until there's a level

btw for construction, we're mostly using scytheeditor.com , a great new Hammer 2-like level design modeling tool for Unreal #blockout

I'm helping with level design on @sleightofhand.game ... the idea of this stealthy trainyard map is to contrast compact metro stations vs. long train tunnels vs. platforms where you duck into / beneath carriages #blocktober

last slide: indiana jones game has a complex grip animation system which exacerbated their "door problems"... it was so bad they made an internal dev meme with a map of their various door hells (see: @lizardengland.bsky.social 's famous post "The Door Problem" www.gamedeveloper.com/design/-quot... )
October 3, 2025 at 12:33 AM
now @godzekesatan.bsky.social talking about how indiana jones is a "pick 'em up" that downplays guns, but focusing on pickups brought a bunch of level design / environment art / set dressing challenges re: what's pickupable etc.
