People have been trying to talk London down, but the evidence tells a different story.

Last year saw:

The lowest murder rate per capita since records began

The fewest murders of those aged under 25 this century

One of the lowest numbers of homicides for almost three decades

So disappointed to see the usual early exit of black and brown contestants in the latest series of The Traitors. It's so painfully obvious but no one seems to reflect on it. Glad at least one person is talking about it in the media. We need a bigger discussion.

People of colour keep leaving Traitors early. We need to talk about why

I don’t think people realise how awful it is in Ukraine right now. Yesterday my friend posted how it’s -9 and because of the power cuts - due to Russian attacks - she has no heating. This is in Kyiv. And this is the day after a mass missile & drone strike killed four people.

We have all become addicted to drama, scandal & hyperbole. Some of us are trying to wean ourselves off it & focus on stuff like this. But it can sometimes feel like being a vegetarian at a barbecue.
At the risk of sounding like a government spokesperson, I wonder if we're too gloomy. NHS waiting times are falling, as are net migration numbers. Growth hasn't been fast, but it's improved. Real wages are growing. Inflation is a bit sticky, but much reduced.

I went to meet some of them, in Plovdiv, last week for this piece in @financialtimes.com. They were amazing.

Andrew Bailey is right. Most people don't realise how shockingly *bad* is the UK's goods trade performance after Brexit and the pandemic. UK exports are 23% lower than the pre-2020 trend and imports are 16% below the trend.
