Checked two versions of ‘Don Quixote’ out of the library today because I want to try both and then stick with the version I like best (which in this case might be the funnier one). It started with Tolstoy, increased with Proust, now I’m a translation nerd/snob. #tolstoytogether #prousttogether

I have just joined the Green Party because I am a total leftie stereotype, but good God, I can't live with no hope that a fairer world isn't possible. And being a realist, if I want to see change, I've got to support something rather than just despairing the entire time.

Being accountable to an international court means our Government has to answer to them if it tries to undermine your human rights. Be very suspicious of any UK politician who wants to remove that check on their powers.

Share this and speak up for your freedoms.

Day 449, Aug 23: “What do you think of Enoch?” = Enoch Powell, UK politician known for his views on immigration & demographic change. In 1968 Powell attracted much attention for his "Rivers of Blood" speech, in which he criticised immigration to UK, esp. from former colonies. #anthonypowelltogether

My thought about migrants on small boats: numbers are only ever going to keep increasing and increasing, because of climate change. Pretending otherwise is just wishful thinking. The only effective thing anyone can try to do to help is attempt to reduce or mitigate (the effects of) climate change.

Day 441, Aug 15, Fri: I’m a day ahead, sorry, but… reference to Trapnel as a “Ninetyish figure” is I think a reference to the decadent writers/artists of the 1890s - I found this article about it. internationaltimes.it/decadence-an... #anthonypowelltogether

Day 435, Aug 9, Sat: Yet again another book opening where Powell flings us headfirst into new waters, and we just have to sink or swim. I started to quite enjoy it, once I’d managed to resurface and catch my breath. And I learned a new word: ‘vaticinatory’ means ‘prophetic’.

“Worth, Inventing Haute Couture,” a new exhibition at Petit Palais, showcases how the 19th-century designer Charles Frederick Worth set the template for many of the conventions and myths that still govern the creation of high fashion today.

One other 7/7 thread today. Because I think how the bus network got running again is a real testament to some serious heroes that day:

The bus drivers and staff who got that network running again and got London home that night.

And TfL/the Mayor disobeyed the Security Services to make it happen /1

Day 401, July 6: So, Americans are all the same in substance, although they appear in different allotropes, i.e. with varying properties. Amusing idea. Perhaps this applies to all nationalities, not just Americans. Welsh, English and Scottish perhaps allotropes of Britishness. #anthonypowelltogether
