Betting on politics since 2010, trying to separate what I want to happen from what I think will happen.
I was thinking this. Are there countries which acted early and did entirely avoid lockdown? I didn't realise there were.

In fairness, wouldn't they say (with some justification) that Republicans are suffering from being too extreme and would benefit from shifting to the centre? It's not like ICE agents grabbing people off the streets and fighting court orders to feed poor people are moderate positions.

I think you mean that not even you can hack the notes afterwards. Automatic encryption.

Would the benefits of all the infrastructure and investment still materialise if, as is likely, the bid crashed out and got nowhere near winning?

You go girl! Don't let anyone tell you that dreams aren't possible.

If they have those boots in hot pink then I'll take them as my Christmas present, thanks.

The algorithm is so good it knows you love gorillas even before you do.

The Malcolm Gladwell of the video age, which I mean as both a compliment and criticism.

You might feel it doesn't quite fit the question being asked, but the Lionesses have.

We have too many boys in our nation's yard.

But surely they are in a position now that without a change of course they won't come back from? So staying the course has no value.

Reeves will change thresholds or exceptions or salary sacrifice and so on and people will end up paying more income tax. And they'll notice and not give her credit for not changing the headline rate.

But they will break it. Just not in a way which generates real fiscal breathing room. So they'll take the trust hit anyway. Actually it will be worse than breaking it openly because it will reinforce the image of them as mealy-mouthed politicians.
November 14, 2025 at 10:43 AM
Genuinely don't see the merits of 'Don't'. Avoids a bad thing now of breaking the promise, but seems to bake in bad things later for both party and country since the public won't tolerate a government not fixing public services. And public already doesn't trust government, so what is gained?

Ironic that people are not only bad at recognising liars, they are even worse at recognising self-deception.
November 6, 2025 at 4:29 PM
I believe that applies strongly to VAT exemptions, as shown by the result of taking VAT off period products (prices fell by like 1%), but not so much to other things.
November 5, 2025 at 10:09 AM
True, but the other side is also responsible. If voters want politicians who tell them hard truths, they shouldn't punish that behaviour with smaller (or non-existent) majorities.

Very fortunate they didn't find two people have been immeasurably rich. Would have ruined the whole exercise.

I think I saw D66 live when they were just a warmup act.

For the reader, priceless. For the taxman, worthless.

Must admit I find this a really surprising outlook coming from your abundance podcast/mindset. They could be doing far more, and raising funds (yes, and taxes) to build far more. The Tories spent a decade shrinking the tax base and state, Labour could do the reverse rather than tweak/nudge.
October 28, 2025 at 12:55 PM
And focus their comms on what they are doing and attacking their opponents. Stop trying to triangulate so much. Why are Labour talking about their opponents legitimate concerns so much?
October 28, 2025 at 12:48 PM
And govern faster/bolder. They have a massive majority! Now is the time you can do big things, and quicker. Incrementalism which you hope adds up by 2029 is a losing strategy, and while they are doing some large pieces of legislation in many areas (eg tax) they are too timid by far.

Plus a cat, but I've never seen them yet.
