the fact that it's found outside the levant backdates it compared to my first impression... could it possibly predate the requirement for اللي's relative clause to have a resumptive pronoun? that would allow sentences like مليح/زين اللي شفت أبي to have contributed to the confusion/reanalysis too

god ty this actually must have been one of the first "ling terms" i learned, i remember spending ages on r/learn_arabic walking ppl thru why "that" is different from "that" (ie why الذي is different from أنّ)... completely gone poof from my brain

i can also add (in my own dialect's voweling) ḥaḍret žanēbak حضرة جنابك, a combination of the very first two (ie 'the presence of your vicinity' or something of the sort), which i've only ever heard used sarcastically at someone who's acting all high and mighty / acting too good for such-and-such

tysm! very worth remembering that there's no reason to expect a term like this to cleanly match up to one exact concept used currently. i wonder if the only way out of this would be to read some of fleisch's non-vernacular arabic treatises to see if he ever dipped into phonology and brought this up

this is my impression of maltese and i think tunisian/other maghrebi arabic (corroborated by the etym here), but i actually don't know the full details / if the overlap between relative and subordinating li is 100%

OH i see so in your experience would you say there isn't really a known/standard translation of نِطْع/نِطْعِيّ? in this case at least your impression is like mine which makes me feel a bit better about it

idk about syria but at least for lebanon im trying to do a review rn and it seems the "rurally" in "the reflex of -ā is often raised rurally" may mean "everywhere other than mount lebanon and maybe hasbayya"? i should check bergsträsser, haven't opened it yet
