Lists of Jewish people — usually not cool. A guide to recreating the glory days of Jwitter? Very cool. Here's a starter pack for our fellow expats coming over to Bluesky:

Trump AG nominee Matt Gaetz has left a trail of antisemitic comments
Gaetz voted against the Antisemitism Awareness Act because it rejected the Christian ‘gospel’ that Jews killed Jesus.

Today's adventure in SinoKoreanology is a 화투 (hwa tu), aka "Flower Battle". The hanja is 花鬪. It is a game played with "flower cards", a type of playing card that originated in Japan and was introduced in Korea late in the 19th century. They're really beautiful! The image is from us-primemuse.com.

So I did a google search for "authors on bluesky", and the very first hit was a list of science writers! So that turned out to be a good idea.

Today's Sino-Korean word is 오행 (o haeng): "5 elements". The hanja is 五行. In the image below 木 (묵 mok) is wood, 火 (화 hua) is fire, 土 (토 to) is earth, 金 (금 geum) is metal, and 水 (수 su) is water. In the middle is 氣 (기 ki), "vital energy" (chi).

In honor of the UAW victory, here's a second Sino-Korean word for the day: 노동 조합 (nodong johab). The hanja is 勞動 組合. This is the Korean word for "labor union". 勞動 means "labor" and 組合 means "to combine".

Today's adventure in Sino-Korean is: 고사성어 (go sa seong eo). The hanja is: 故事成語. It kind of means "idiom", but it's much more specific than that. It really means something more like "ancient proverb". These are so deeply ingrained in Korean culture that they are part of the civil service examination!

Sino-Korean word of the day: 수업 (su eob), which means "lesson" or "class". The hanja for this one is 授業, which literally means "teach" + "work". The first hanja, 授, has a more general meaning of "to give". The second hanja, 業, is widely used in Buddhism to mean "karma".

Sino-Korean word of the day: 시계, pronounced ~shikye. The hanja for this is 時計. This first character (shi) means "time" is a combination of 日 (일, sun) and 寺 (사, temple). The second character (kye) means "count" and is 言 (언, word) combined with 十 (십, ten). Another hanja pronounced 계 is 鷄, "chicken".

I definitely don't agree with everything Zizek says here, but it is worth listening to, if only because it is such a fascinating snapshot of the moment in history that we are living through right now.

I have often been told that "Kyol Che" means "tight dharma". But now I know that it actually means "tightly controlled". The hangeul is 결제 (gyeol je), and the hanja is 結制. The first character means "tie/bind", and the second character means "control/regulate". www.mindisbuddha.org/%E7%B5%90%E5...
