Did I mention that 鷄, the hanja for "chicken", is also pronounced 계? I once spent the winter (of '96-'97) on 鷄龍山 (계룡간) mountain ("chicken dragon mountain" - I'm told it doesn't sound funny in Korean).That was the winter I did 결제 at 신원사.

Another hanja pronounced 계 is 溪 which means a mountain stream, or a gorge or valley. This hanja is part of one of the major Buddhist temples in Korea: 華溪寺, 화계사 (hwa gye sa, flower valley temple). Notice that sometimes you see 계 transliterated at "gye" and sometimes as "kye". Beware transliterations!
