Musings on Inflatable Christmas Lawn Decorations
They arrive in November, some even before Thanksgiving, like the juncos that spend the warm months in the boreal forests and ride the cold north winds to New Jersey’s suburban yards. Some of them sleep by day, like Dracula but unfazed by sunlight. They bear umbilical cords and await the delivery of electrons that will set diodes ablaze, turn fan blades, and maybe set wings flapping or wheels spinning.

The Best Peaches I Ever Ate
It’s peak peach season (say that five times fast!) in northern New Jersey, and the supermarkets, farmers markets, and produce stands are all offering locally grown fruit. Jody and I have become produce snobs in the past decade or so, making weekly trips to the Montclair Farmers Market almost every Saturday all year around, and we usually buy peaches from the stall run by Treelicious Orchards in Port Murray, New Jersey, about 50 miles west of our home.

Book Read: The Day the World Stops Shopping
If you still have space on your summer 2025 reading list and the inclination to read something more serious than a typical summer read, here’s a recommendation. Having been raised by parents who lived through the Great Depression and World War II I observed and picked up practices of using consumer goods, from clothing and shoes to tools and appliances to automobiles, until they wore out and could no longer be repaired.
