Lucas García was killed by a school bus driver on Oct. 2, 2025 while crossing the street in Providence. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a family and a community in mourning. Join us Tues. Oct. 7, 4:30pm as we remember Lucas with those who knew and loved him, whose worlds are now shattered.

He was 38 years old and leaves behind a family and a community in mourning. Join us as we remember Lucas with family and those who knew and loved Lucas whose worlds are now shattered, and call for meaningful change to prevent another tragedy like this from happening. Lucas is the second person to die at this corner in the last three years, following Violet Barracks, age 76, who was killed by a driver in May 2022. Join advocates, labor leaders and community organizers as we light a candle and mourn RIPTA's current service as it heads into an uncertain and scaled back future. Governor McKee's sweeping service cuts go into effect Saturday Sept. 27, with slashed frequencies, weekend eliminations, and truncated routes. This "right sizing" of RIPTA will have all of the wrong impacts: decreased ridership, increased burden on current riders, and everyday people unable to get to their jobs, classes, or appointments reliably. The fight is not over. Advocates and riders will continue to push for legislation that restores and expands funding for RIPTA, and organize behind candidates who prioritize the lives and livelihoods of transit riders.
