“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”

Educators—Today we must recommit to education as a labor of human dignity and a practice of justice-directed social change.

And we must do so:

trains are such a great example of how the future is here, if we want it and are willing to subsidize it
It’s over 1,000km from Berlin to Paris

There’s now a direct daytime train between them, that takes 8 hours and costs just €59. Leave at 10am, arrive 6pm.

And… it’s just 1% the carbon emissions of the equivalent flight

High-speed Paris-Berlin daily train service debuts
The route is the first directly linking the two capitals' city centres.

just blurted out in class "yes, you have to cite where you got your info. in a world in which lying loudly is the only thing that seems to get rewarded, citing your sources is an act of resistance" and folks, I really believe that.

To repeat: OpenAI is not a friend to public education.
OpenAI's forays into education lately are not motivated by interest in education, but by opportunistic market making now it's realized students are its main users and it could get into schools too. OpenAI is not a friend to public education. It's a private predator on public education funds. 1/3

I am thrilled to share our new paper which investigates the role of continuous measures in linguistic diversity research. We found that children who are exposed to more linguistic diversity (e.g., language, dialect, accent) are perceptually more flexible. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I resent how AI has commandeered every research agenda, curricular program, funding initiative, policy agenda. Every grant program, fellowship theme, new funding initiative: AI + [Fill in the Blank]. AI and Society! AI and Public Health! AI and Pedagogy! AI and Rubber Chickens! I really don't care.

Reading a blog post that urges educators to "Treat GenAI The Way You Treat Google Search" and no, don't do that! For one, the energy costs of querying an LLM are much higher than a traditional Web search. And two, see:

As OpenAI and Meta introduce LLM-driven searchbots, I'd like to once again remind people that neither LLMs nor chatbots are good technology for information access.
