Dr. Diana Bianchi, director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, was fired this morning at 10AM EDT. Part of the NIH “reorg” (whatever that means)? Or the start of an NIH leadership bloodbath. Guess we will find out.

Thurmond was the same age as Booker when he set the record Senator Cory Booker just broke.

Thurmond was afforded a bathroom break and read from the encyclopedia. Booker held the floor the entire time and delivered a consistent, cogent speech for more than 24 hours.

Incredible.

It's getting a lot of attn today. But even before today most of the country had very little idea of what has happened at NIH or through it the entire ecosystem of biomedical research in the US. Simply put, Musk, Kennedy & Trump exploded a bomb right in the middle of cancer cure research in the US.

With each new assault on democratic norms, I keep going back to this problem of there being no downside for Trump for brazenly unconstitutional grabs. At worst, a court stops him — and he’s no worse off.

We’ve relied on presidents’ good faith and decency. That’s clearly no longer enough.

Where does TrumpElon think innovation for all their favorite biotech corporations comes from? PCR only exists because somebody was looking for bacteria in hot springs at Yellowstone. I’m just a private practice ophthalmologist who barely understands p values but even I know this shit is important.
This is my institution. These are the people I work with making these decisions. The situation is heartbreaking. Public medical schools have no other choice; there is no other source of funding, and everyone in academia is at extreme risk right now.

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a dual-antibody treatment that remains effective against ALL SARS-CoV-2 variants by targeting a less-mutable part of the virus. This breakthrough could lead to longer-lasting therapies that OUTPACE viral evolution. 🧪🧵⬇️

Why such a milquetoast headline? This is a blatant conflict of interest that both Trump and Musk and many Republicans promised wouldn't happen. They lied to us and Musk is lining his pockets with taxpayer money.

There are two people in Congress-the chairs of the Senate & House Appropriations Committees-who have enormous power over the illegal impoundment of funds appropriated by Congress, which is sowing chaos across the US. They need to be relentlessly contacted at their offices, in person and by phone. 1/

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

I have worked on civil wars and state capture for 25 years.
So let me be REALLY clear about this for Americans:

Your courts are only as useful as the willingness of politicians to comply with those judgments.
And the willingness of police to enforce.

And Musk, Trump & Co do NOT care about the law
