On a train so here are some thoughts about punting

-touchbacks aren’t that bad. If a TB was a bad result, then you probably should have gone for it

-distance matters way more than anything when evaluating college punters (Araiza, Stonehouse, Taylor, Baringer> Robbins, Stout)

Yale has really shiny numbers on their jerseys and I’m sure there’s at least 400 extremely snooty people in the crowd talking about how it’s distasteful

Ethan Evans 100% won the rams that game

Game is too good to have a fully fleshed take on this atm, but in the era of dynamic kickoffs and long FG range, the late game pin deep punt has become a super valuable play

How did Braden Mann finish week 1 as our top punter?

Consistent distance, perfect placement, and no returns.

1st punt: flips the field on this 51 yarder with plenty of hang time. Going right hash to outside left numbers ensures Turpin can't set up a return for himself.

BRADEN MANN BREAKOUT SEASON

We're so back

In a very small sample size, Jake Bailey had better results that Ryan Stonehouse in two preseason games, so it makes sense that he won the job.

Unfathomable that Stonehouse wouldn’t make a 53 man roster somewhere else though. The guy is too good at punting to be left out

Alright, quick refresh on all the new punter homes
TMor -> niners
Hekker -> titans
Sam Martin -> panthers
Brad Robbins -> bills

Jeremy Crawshaw -> broncos
Austin McNamara -> jets

James Burnip vs Kai Kroeger-> saints
🔥 🔥 Jake Bailey vs Ryan Stonehouse -> dolphins 🔥 🔥

Broncos did indeed draft the first punter in the sixth round as we predicted.

Jeremy Crawshaw was our second ranked punter in the class. Big leg, and multiples years of high level production, but dropped off in 2024.

You asked, we delivered

On draft-eve, here's our punters only mock draft! Our silliest annual tradition where we make predictions on which teams will draft which punter so that we can gloat online if we end up being right.

Yesterday we looked at all-time great punters, but how about the young guns?

Our Punter EPA metric is era adjusted, which lets us compare the careers of punters since 1999.

How good are we at evaluating college punters? Pretty good, especially if your name is Ryan, it turns out.

Hell yes Punter news! Plus a full punt extension picture.
Punter news! Broncos P Riley Dixon is going to the Bucs, as they’ve agreed to terms, sources say. He gets a 2-year, $6M.

We have our first punter team change of free agency!

Riley Dixon signs with the Bucs for 2 years 6M

Dixon was an above average punter last year and has been good throughout his career. Good signing for the Bucs with few options remaining and a weak draft class
March 11, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Ryan Stonehouse is also a restricted free agent, but I'd be shocked if he left Tennessee
March 10, 2025 at 4:02 PM
Johnny Hekker, Riley Dixon, Bryan Anger, and JK Scott remain unsigned

CAR, DAL, DEN, LAC, and TB have obvious holes at punter

GB will probably re sign Whelan

Tbd on KC

We'll be here updating you all day!
This should be an interesting free agency for punters

8 teams' 2024 punters are UDFAs (CAR, DAL, DEN, LAC, NYG, PHI, TB, and WAS)

GB, KC, MIN, and TB have some form of restricted free agent remaining from last year

and the punter draft class looks quite weak
