It is utterly obvious that these are all utterly shorthand and cardboard cutout caricatures but they also genuinely draw some of the complex and intersecting lines of English & to a lesser extent British class. It's far more about what your parents did than it is about your pay packet.

Do a cultural or at desk creative or skilled job? You're cultural middle class. My parents were dirt poor refugees in one sense but a professor and a linguist in other senses. My dad knew painters and writers. We didn't have cash but we had cultural capital. Cultural middle class. Hopefully...

Are technical middle class. Perry does a brilliant section on technical Vs cultural middle class in the show. All brand new everything? Brand names on your chest? Big SUV? Technical middle class.
2b. Cultural middle class. Bookshelves and art on walls? Second or more generation middle class?...

Nouveau riche. Basically if you're a plumber you could be earning 3x what most middle class people earn but working class due to lack of prospects or ambition and/or how settled you are. Whereas if you are owner of van & employ a few other plumbers, have moved out to Essex or a modern suburb? You...

Now, there's modern idea of an 'underclass' but in essence if your life is repetitive or physical & particularly if you don't expect it to be more than that, working class. Don't expect to work nor your kids? Underclass say some. Now it gets complex.
2a. Working class v technical middle class or...

Might not even have any left, your ancestors might have long ago squandered them, but you're still left with a plummy accent and an unshakeable belief you will prosper or it doesn't matter if you fail anyway. Someone else will tidy up your mess.
3. Working class is broadly manual or menial work...

This comes IMO close to nailing it: bsky.app/profile/lore... but there is a generational element to it that Grayson Perry gets into in the brilliant Channel 4 show he did on class & taste.
The easy to quantify classes are upper & working.
1. Upper class is generational assets so large that you...
Broadly: UK working class make their living with their bodies, middle class make their living with their minds, upper class make their living with their assets.
But it isn’t just you, it’s also the people you’re from, your beliefs, attitudes, aspirations.
It’s not about income, at individual level.

Do you really think I think that it's too stringent to wait until 85% or more of motor vehicles doing 30+mph on a road where people are cycling (or walking or crossing on unsignalised crossings) before you say it's a 'critical' safety issue for an active travel scheme? Of course it's too lax.

This will all be quite delicious down the way though, won't it?

IMO it's highly tongue-in-cheek. Do I view it as the perfect way to promote sensible rider behaviour? No. Do I think it's more than a little extreme to leap to flame everyone possible and call it "victim-blaming crap" given current rider behaviour & rhetoric from politicians? Yup.

Northern junction east west is improved a lot but across the bridge is still as was basically.

The link goes to a campaign with four strands. One of the strands is, of course, bus stops and continuous footways. I am so exhausted with the nonstop idea that cycling represents the greatest threat to humanity and needs to be designed out of existence but cars and driving is just a fact of life.

Think there already has been some discussion. Let me check.

The quiet beating heart of the entire film IMO is Del Toro. Absolutely brilliant movie I'm still riffing off more than a week later.
