I’ve had an idea for a low sci-fi novel rolling around in my head for a couple years. I’d made some notes here and there, but hadn’t done any actual writing.

In the midwest emo Facebook group I’m in (yes I know) someone posted a screenshot of a message board post from 1999 of a person asking if anyone listened to emo and listed some examples of bands and labels he considered “true emo.” The poster’s caption was “This guy invented gatekeeping.”

Went and saw Nosferatu today (my birthday.) Eggers has such an incredible handle on how to generate the atmosphere that a particular story calls for. The cinematography and sound design are always particularly on point.

I’ve been working A LOT lately on my Tooth & Nail book and reviewing the interviews one thing that I’m really homing in on now is a very strong disconnect between the perception of “Christian punk” in the minds of teens/parents v. the perception of the bands.

I’ve started building a database of lyrics from every Tooth & Nail (and affiliated labels) release. Right now I just have a 100 page Google doc that only goes through about 1996 of lyrics, but I’m working on transitioning that to this site:

I bought an I Think You Should Leave ornament and got added to a shipping notification email with about 250 other customers Cc’d. I’d be more upset had it not quickly devolved into an 100-reply thread of memes.

I was reading a review of Cursive’s Devourer (incredible record btw) where the reviewer claimed to become “vehemently against everything mewithoutYou is about” after seeing them play a “very boring set” while on tour with Cursive in 2019.

My first Wax Mage pressing arrived a couple days ago (Open Hand’s *The Dream*). It’s /25 and is absolutely stunning in person. Been chasing one of these for a while that was A) from a band I like and B) actually affordable.

Sharkswimmer is a newer indie/punk/emo band out of New York. Their debut LP, Serenity, came out last year. They’re also releasing their first three EPs collected on vinyl in a few weeks.

Starting to work on my top 100 albums of the year, my fifth since I started my vinyl IG in 2020. It’s been an incredibly packed year for punk/indie/emo/posthardcore. There were a lot of mainstay bands who put out very good new records. The new toe record has been in the mix a lot since it dropped.

A new record from Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record) dropped about a month ago, and it’s wonderful. It’s his second record as “Mountain Time,” and first new material since 2020. Been listening to it a ton lately.

Kristen was laid off from a brand new job about a week and a half ago. And since I’m still in between jobs, we decided to use this opportunity to go to Disneyland because she’s never been.
On our way, she got an email that the company that laid her off wants to rehire her in a different role. 🎉🎉🎉

The covers album of American Football’s LP1 is very good. It strikes the perfect balance between honoring the original and making it original that makes a cover great. The mix of artists is also excellent: Yvette Young, M.A.G.S., Iron & Wine, Girl Ultra, John McEntire. Highly recommended.
