Historian of early modern and eighteenth-century France who sees historical parallels everywhere. Interested in fashion, gender, politics, food. And cat photos.
Great idea from @cholden07.bsky.social--Democratic candidates for president should promise that they will rip down the #Epstein ballroom and rebuild the #EastWing --and "The Trump family will pay for it!"

Thanks to @americanstudier.bsky.social for his always-useful round up and the shout out for my Made by History article on the difficulties of political reconciliation earlier this week. Here is the link: time.com/7321634/fren...

I wrote this for TIME's Made by History. Responsible political leadership would help today as well! time.com/7321634/fren...
History Shows How Not to Resolve Political Differences
The history of the French Revolution shows that clamping down on dissent cannot heal political and cultural hatreds.

DC was the place to be today! And any place else that like-minded people turned out. #NoKings

I remember when it was a black mark if a circuit court was regularly overturned by #SCOTUS. Doesn't it seem as if SCOTUS should be embarrassed that suddenly they are overturning all the courts all the time? That maybe the lower courts are getting it right and they are the problem?

Really fabulous to meet @jamellebouie.net tonight when he was giving his terrific Constitution Day Lecture at #SMCM.

Amy Coney Barrett is the Susan Collins of the #SupremeCourt.

If Democrats ever take control again, aggressive Supreme Court reform has to be the first priority, or nothing else will matter. We cannot consent to remaining in thrall to a shadowy crew of mullahs who wave through the illegal and unconstitutional actions of an administration of thugs.

I could definitely see Mike Johnson cast as the anti-Christ in a movie. Maybe he is.

A propos of nothing--as I said when Rush Limbaugh died, I hope that when I pass, people don't conclude that the world is a better place.

History professor here. Classes start in a little over a week. I guess I will be indoctrinating majors with "woke" ideology as I discuss with them what is actually going on in our world and how it affects their ability to be serious historians.

Yes. Let's get on this @kaine.senate.gov @markwarner.bsky.social @beyer.house.gov. I know it won't happen yet, but propose it and keep proposing it. Let be ready when the moment comes.

Thoughtful essay from @jeremycyoung.bsky.social
NEW: two recent polls show an uptick in popularity for higher ed. That says more about the "thermostatic effect" in politics than it does about colleges, I explain in @aacu.org's Liberal Education Online -- but it does give us an opening to make our case. www.aacu.org/liberaleduca...

Calling Mike Johnson and Stephen Miller--this assessment of Joachim von Ribbentrop applies to you and so many GOP tools: " He was an example of that paradox, a million times repeated--the "totalitarian man" who achieves the longed-for feeling of self-elevation only in a state of total subservience.
August 22, 2025 at 6:43 PM
MAGA accuses professors of indoctrinating students with "woke" ideas, while they pass laws in red states mandating their warped version of history in the classroom. Maybe it's time for #historians who still enjoy academic freedom to enter the fray and train warriors for truth--which ≠ neutrality.

I assume that if a Democratic president is ever allowed to be elected again they can determine that the high rate of shootings in Texas constitutes a state of emergency that requires sending in the military to confiscate all guns?

Maybe the #sandwich will become the symbol of the resistance, sort of like the Bundschuh for German peasants in 1524.

GOP senators are, without exception, scum.

Great turnout for the #NoKings protest in Old Town Alexandria--terrific speech by mayor @alyia4alx.com. So glad to live here, and proud of my fellow citizens who know that we can do better.

For those who think that government should learn from the private sector how to operate like a business, it has--let the corporate overlords control everything, squeeze money out of the operation to enrich the overlords in control, and crush the people who do the actual work.

Terrific show in DC last night. Important cause. Thanks to @crooked.com and @thebulwark.com. #FreeAndry and all the others.
