Stuart Fork Creek, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, CA. Felt like a PNW kind of day.

At one point we had 1900 people at camp for the Green Fire. The logistical challenge of organizing and running these camps - as well as fighting the fire - is immense. But it gets done on the ground, in the air and on the water.

Heck of a month. Worked four fires, with two of em getting the most attention. Plenty of long days, but not as hard as the folks pulling 14-day swings on the fire line. Anyway, some pics on the trap line and at camp…

As a kid I was a metal head, and all those Ozzy tunes were huge in those circles. Anyone with an affinity for heavy metal music knows that the genre doesn’t exist without Black Sabbath and it’s wildman vocalist Ozzy Osborne.

Fire season off to a fast start

Some sweet scenery on Shasta Lake, but you can also make out the haze from a nearby fire, the Green Fire. Fire season starting with a bang.

Little late with these, but a couple weeks back our firefighters went through their readiness review: exercises designed to simulate wildfire scenarios. In one exercise, live fire was used. Very cool couple of days, and privileged to be there. The SHF firefighters are ready for fire season.

My office for part of the day today. This is a big college kid party weekend for students in Oregon and California, and s bunch of em come to Shasta Lake. So we went out to give them trash bags for their campsites and generally tell them to have fun but be safe.

Shasta Bally and the Sacramento River as seen from Redding, CA. Heck of a view I get to see every time I go into town.

Ok, enough bummer posts. Time for a little light. Did you know there are mountains in Oklahoma? It’s true. The Wichitas.

Good day in the field. There is a wild contrast watching fire crews do fuels reduction work in an area of a forest that got nuked by wildfire a few years back.

New fires popping up in SoCal. A trend is developing: urban wildfires.

Paradise, CA. Lahaina, HI. Now LA. Fires breaking off in vegetation, spreading into developed areas, then torching entire communities.

Once is a tragedy. But when it repeats itself it’s a crisis. A wildfire crisis.

Spent some time outdoors today. Cool, sunny day near Burney, CA.

Something I think people need to learn from the news of late is this: Get used to more large-scale natural disasters. From LA to Appalachia, the Gulf Coast to tornado alley: Seems like things are getting more extreme and no one is immune. We have to think ahead with this in mind.
