I love thinking about @prewarcinema.bsky.social's excellent editing work on Pavements as "a stitched-together mixtape of all the different interpretations of the band."
In the new Pavement movie, extreme sincerity and self-protective irony coexist onscreen just as they do in the band’s music. We talked to the film’s editor Robert Greene about striking that balance.

In our slide towards a fascist state, this is what a Missouri legislator said as he rejected the will of 58% of Missourians to raise the minimum wage. “Of course the people voted for it. It’d be like asking your teenager if he wanted a checkbook. You know, they’re going to vote for it every time.”

From director Alex Ross Perry, PAVEMENTS may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, & may or may not be more about the idea of the band—or any band—than a history of ’90s American alt group Pavement.

One thing I found out about Sinners is that the people who live where it's set can't watch it because there's no movie theater around! Credit to everyone making this effort to bring it to them, but it sucks that this is a problem to begin with www.wgbh.org/news/2025-05...
One man's effort to bring 'Sinners' to residents of the town where it takes place
The movie Sinners takes place in Clarksdale, Miss., but its residents can't watch it without leaving town. Now the movie is coming to them.

we've not checked with Film Forum yet but Matador is issuing an executive order (ahem) that the Movie Mate is banned from screenings of "Pavements". If you want a fake friend, get a human edition, there's plenty of them.

Go see Pavements this weekend if you're in NYC!

For the rest of us, here's this week's documentary listings.
This week’s highlights include new documentaries about the band Pavement and the inventor of a humanoid robot, plus a look back at two 30-year-old Oscar-winning Holocaust-focused films. Also: it's already awards season for docs again.

Honestly I don’t know the first thing about Pavement, the band, but the semi-documentary PAVEMENTS is at least as much about the goofy ways we try to memorialize rockers in docs and fiction alike and it’s terrific:

Part spoof and part serious, the film is about mythmaking as much as it is about music. The result is delightfully destabilizing.
