With Lazarus, Home from the War being named to the Fated Mates best of 2025 list this week, it seems like the perfect time to announce the preorder for my new novella!

Comes out 12/21 (Sam's birthday) but it's more about the solstice than Christmas.

There is a tiny amount of overlap between people who listen to Ask a Medievalist and people who play Learned League, but if you're in both, we got you covered yesterday.

I ordered a print AND got it framed within, uh, a month of it arriving! Impossible but true.

Here is a thing I should probably mention here. If you're in the Twin Cities, come see me interview MA Wardell on stage next week, 11/18! Tickets and preorders here: tropesandtrifles.com/events/37518...

Skill issue, David.

I need a flowchart that says "character(s) is/are having sex; is it fun?" And if you say "yes, everyone has a good time" the book is worthless, and if you say "no, everyone hates it" you get to win a literary prize.

From up on my roof yesterday.

Sometimes your brain goes "I will create a focus so hyper," and then five days later you've finished a quilt.

This is a hand-tied panel quilt for my 4yo. It has a bunch of problems but it is done. And for a 4yo. The back is a repurposed crib sheet. (Actually, everything here was in my stash.)

Dionysus in Wisconsin is 40% off on Kobo until November 17th with the code NOVEMBER40! (In AU, CA, NZ, UK, US.) If you like books about guys walking around with a god in their head, academia, Shakespeare jokes, and magic, you should check it out.

This is in Middleton, maybe two miles from here. Homemade artisanal stuff.

The 8yo asked me to build a castle for the dragons. I said if he'd draw a blueprint, I'd see what I could do.

I am not at all handy (there's more than a little wish fulfillment in Laz "I fix everything " Lenkov) but I made this. Kids are pleased. Maybe sometime we'll paint it.

I find this very amusing. I'm very lucky with my readers, but the seasons people most want to read my books (in paperback) are: gay and spooky.

I made a test puff this morning. I think ironing, measuring, and cutting is going to be the most time-consuming part of this. I had to dig the ironing board out from under various knit things I was blocking on it.

Just to clarify my complaint, this is what the database looks like. It's called a MARC record and for historical reasons it uses numbers instead of field names. So for the "and" in "publisher and date" to be highlighted, it's somehow searching the metadata the system is using on the front end.
October 21, 2025 at 2:39 PM
Not to put my library on blast, but when I am doing a title search, why is it highlighting an "and" in the record metadata rather than the 245 field?

Also, why is this coming up at all? Fifty-one libraries have No Exit in French but they don't have Anti-Semite and Jew?

This is the shirt.

The deeper I get into this project, the more it changes me in ways I cannot predict nor prepare for.

Something something closed-door romance?
October 17, 2025 at 4:35 PM
An interesting question. I've been working on a project set in France. So I was looking at a map of the area around Carnac and found this notation. (Google Maps maybe labels it as "les 2 cheminées" instead, or it might be "les deux frères.")

Nice.

(Have I been watching this for a while as it crept closer? Yes.)

This would be an excellent missing scene from Dionysus in Wisconsin...or a Harry/Ellen spin-off? What *are* they doing in Berkeley after the summer of 1971?
