Thanks. To be fair to him, that was an advantage he’d created for himself through his television work, but his experience is definitely rather different to that of the average debut author looking for a deal.

Not to my knowledge – and I’d imagine that that would have broken his contract with his existing agent – but I could be wrong. Even so, the publisher who paid a seven figure advance for it did so knowing it was him.

To be fair to him, he built his TV career. But yes, his authorial career began with some definite advantages!

Publishing people: what do you think of NetGalley? Is it worth it?

The case against: you are paying for people to read books they might otherwise buy, in the hope of generating some sort of “buzz”, counted in terms of online reviews which can be just as damaging as they are beneficial.
