Unsolicited writing advice, no: 73:
Stop calling yourself an "aspiring writer."
Just write.
Now, you're a writer.
Keep writing, reading, observing, learning.
Soon, you'll be a better writer.

Reminder: the First Amendment protects everyone who resides in our country. It doesn't matter if you have a green card or a visa or if you're undocumented. The Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that any person residing in the United States, regardless of status, is entitled to 1A protections.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but fascism often begins with the slow erosion of civil liberties and the rise of authoritarianism under the guise of ‘security measures’.

I think Duane Bryers’ Hilda art is such a perfect example of how making art about a subject that you genuinely find beautiful will show your audience how to appreciate it the way that you do. Art is all about opening this little porthole to show people the world through your filter

After unprecedented newspaper raid, journalists remain defiant

quick art tip for those who need it: stop putting so much value into your sketchbooks. meaning, don’t feel like every page has to have a “perfect” work or whatever. you’d be surprised how common this attitude is and it’s how people fall off from drawing regularly. it’s a sketchbook get fuckin’ messy

It's no accident that libraries have become a target in the culture wars, writes @annaleen.bsky.social -- it's because, both as literal spaces and as metaphor, they are key to how we can come together again www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
Opinion | Libraries can help end the culture wars. That’s why they’re under fire.
Nothing threatens authoritarianism like a free, quiet place to absorb a full range of information.

I really miss when you could go to public spaces and not hear someone flicking through short form videos out loud every few seconds

even spaces that used to do a good job of asking people to not be rude seem to have given up. if you ask nicely to use headphones they act like you killed their family

there’s a post going around how it’s okay not to read the classics and of course it’s okay to read/not read whatever you want, BUT:
1) the classics are not a scam to make you read dead white men, in fact many celebrated authors are women/POC
2) you will often be surprised what you like if you try it

Goddamn. Just watched Harris’ rally break out into a spontaneous “NOT GOING BACK!” chant followed by Beyoncé’s “Freedom”. Forgot how fun it used to feel to be excited and inspired back at the beginning of the Obama campaign in ‘08. Maybe had feared things were too cynical to get there again.

We can and should ignore a lot of noise this season, but we need to deal with this nonsense: “Kamala is a descendant of a white slave owner.” Yes. Many of us are descended from the enslaved and the slave owning. If you really can't figure out why, we have books for that.
