If you go for mass appeal, then it will be less personalised.
While I think it's generally better to make the game appealing to a larger audience, I also think it'll reduce the game essense and personal touch to it. As Sakurai once put it nicely.

There were ideas of having an NPC to tell you where you need to go, but I left it out as I feel that lose sense of exploration and self-discovery

If signs told you to go down platforms, then there was no curiousity, but without, players could get lost too. It's a tough balance

The Wolf enemies in HertenHeld were intended to be the most prominent ones. I had ideas to make them very smart and require combat skills to beat

In practise they ended up been so aggressive that you're better off avoiding them, I guess that's another way to make them notable

I like this hub area I made, it's the first save point you visit, and it's located at a pretty central spot.

Whenever you come back here, you're stronger than you were before, and from here, you also access a new path you couldn't reach earlier.

When you reach an item room, I like it that you get stuck in that room until you figured out how to use the item and found at least one use-case out of them.

Similair how Metroid does the "Go Left first" trope, I tried doing something similar on my own way.

The game starts out linear, but after the bridge, you reach a dead end. Once you try falling through the bridge, the game opens up with more paths to explore.

Fall is probably my favorite season, as I love watching the leaves falling from the trees.

The falling leaves effect in HertenHeld were also inspired by observing the falling leaves on a walk to home.
