Poor future schoolkids.
Poor future students.
Poor future historians.

Imagine being a future person having to learn about and try and understand our present.

Make things a little easier for them, start keeping a diary.
A proper one, on paper.
Start soon.

Big brained meditations on Octavia Butler, the LA fires, AI, grief, memory, all inspired by a photo of him and the late, great Nikki Giovanni, from Hanif Abdurraqib:

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but when people say that AI is their "thought partner" I wonder how to have a thought partner that cannot think (or feel, or communicate with intention). What appears to be thought is an illusion that only achieves meaning through the human interpreting it.

I love how certain chatgpt sounds when it just brazenly suggests a book as a notable source... but this book is nowhere to be found... not a trace of it...
And people share this sort of thing with me in discussions to prove me wrong...

Students who haven’t mastered foundational writing skills shouldn’t be using AI.

I guess those “teachers” haven’t watched a student AI their day away…
There *are* great ways to use it (study/review partner 👍🏻) but basic critical thinking skills must exist.
AI is being used by students to avoid thinking & they definitely aren’t reading it before turning in just what AI told them.
Easy to get the wrong impression around here, but when you actually survey students, teachers, and parents they love AI.

In the survey, it is people who never used it who don’t like it. www.waltonfamilyfoundation.org/learning/the...

Fun trivia.

The people who wrote our Constitution weren't sure whether they were going to include a procedure for impeaching the President. Benjamin Franklin made the final argument to convince them.

Want to know how he changed their minds?

And I am just as devastated about Jamboard’s death as I was when they eliminated Reader 10+ years ago.

The other alternatives I’ve tried thus far are not nearly as quick to get students into and working.
For those who don't know, Jamboard will be permanently deleted from the internet on December 31, 2024.

Hey ~ new kid in class here. 👋Looking forward to rebuilding community with fellow educators as well as democracy, science, and book enthusiasts. Now that I have arrived… It looks like transitioning to StoryGraph is the next thing on my to do list.
