Finally reading “Jesus and John Wayne” by Dr Kristen Kobes Du Metz…

Page one and it’s already regressing me with the terrible things that happened while I was a pastor at Mars Hill church.

Is this going to traumatize me?

Today’s David Bentley Hart #WordOfTheDay “farraginous” comes from his footnote to Revelation 5:6.

farraginous • \fuh-RAJ-uh-nus\ • adjective. : consisting of a confused mixture : formed of various materials in no fixed order or arrangement.

What more proof is needed that Paul did not write the pastoral epistles than this:

Titus 3:10-11 “After a first and second admonition, have nothing more to do with anyone who causes divisions, since you know that such a person is perverted and sinful, being self-condemned.”

The lie of the Celebrity pastor cult is that a sermon must be good, or somehow better than the sermons of other pastors or churches. All good theologians know that all sermons are bad. Stop grading a church by its preaching. Preaching means saying foolish things from a stage.

Our good friend David Bentley Hart, once again, trying to dismiss, downplay, and/or deny the doctrine of election in his otherwise excellent New Testament translation. Your orthodox biases are on display.

Folks, remember that all bible translations are ultimately commentaries.

“I do not seek to understand so I may believe but I believe so I may understand.” (“Neque enim quaero intelligere ut credam sed credo ut intelligam”) – Anselm of Canterbury, Faith Seeking Understanding (Proslogion I)
The fides quaerens intellectum, which is different than apologetics means once our eyes are opened to faith by the holy spirit (which faith is one with doubt and not certainty) then we may believe with our eyes open.

The apostles did not do apologetics. They proclaimed the gospel and did not ask anyone to believe or argue people into faith.

The entire Case For Christ series and similar apologetics books, merch, movies ad nauseam is a massive evangelical grift. Same with the Josh McDowell and other derivatives.

Why are churches still recommending apologetic books like Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ?

Are you trying to drive people away with a whip?

Reading DB Hart’s translation of Ephesians. I appreciate his linking of the all-in-all themes and the angelic proper nouns of Rule, Authority, Power & Lordship. It drags the authorship towards a stronger Paul attribution without pretending it is the lost Epistle to the Laodiceans

I celebrated the first Sunday of advent in a large Catholic Church in Victoria BC.

I appreciated that there was no giant screen projecting talking and singing heads.

A simple service. The only thing upfront that I could see was a large raised crucifix of Jesus at center stage.

Joachim Jeremias argues that pre-Columbian corn was traded in second temple Jerusalem that was imported from Egypt based on the Tosephta Maksherin iii.4.

“A friend is someone who likes you.

It can be a boy or a girl,

or a cat or a dog, or even a white mouse.

A tree can be your friend too.

It doesn't talk to you, but you know it likes you...”

A free society is not an accumulation of independent individuals; it is a a community of persons in solidarity—a community of "care and share."

The paradigm of rule is auctoritas facit legem ("authority makes the law") while the paradigm of the free society is pacta sunt servanda ("agreements must be kept").
