I love that my feed here is filled with posts about animals, plants, astronomy, and other sciences to offset the news of the day. Photo of Clifford, a big red dog for tax.

An old friend died last night. It's heartbreaking to know I'll never see him again. 40+ years of memories. RIP JC.

We know that aversive training methods are bad for dogs, and that we should stick to reward-based methods, but sometimes people aren't sure what they are. I've got a post about that, if you want to know more: www.companionanimalpsychology.com/2023/06/what...
What are Reward-Based Training Methods for Dogs (and Cats)?
It's best for your pet if you only use reward-based methods to train them. Here’s what that means.

The replies to this post...🤣
Reading an internal NIH guidance memo which basically says since we’re probably going to be shutting down labs with little or no notice just be sure to remember about the whole disposing of biohazard materials the right way thing. ☣️ 😬🤡

Recently at WIRED we've written about some other eyebrow raising animal research, including plans to make brain-computer interfaces for dogs and glow-in-the-dark pets. The biotech revolution is here and we're documenting it.

If you're looking to transition your cat to indoor-only due to H1N1, great! There are many other benefits, too. But it may not go well if you just shut them in and call it a day, you need to commit to giving them an enriched indoor environment with lots of play. felineengineering.com/blog/indoor-...

Dogs love opportunities to work for their supper.
The easiest way to add a little mental enrichment to your dog's day is to ditch the food bowl! Get creative with their meals: egg carton taped shut with kibble inside, cardboard box with newspaper & kibble inside, scatter kibble around the yard. Let them forage & shred for their supper! #dogtraining

Differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) is widely misunderstood in dog training as "reinforcing any acceptable behavior" when in fact it's reinforcement delivered contingent on the passage of time without unwanted behavior. A brief explainer: kikiyablondogtraining.com/kiki-blog/20...
