Where Huxley, in words that Benjamin quoted in a footnote, had taken this change as facilitating vulgarity and the output of trash, Benjamin imagined its liberating potential. Not that he was naive enough to argue that the output of trash had not also increased thanks to technological change. For him, the new standard of technical reproduction was what alcohol was for fellow dialectician Homer Simpson - the cause of, and remedy for, the impoverishment of human experience. Its easy to imagine what this impoverishment looks like: D. H. Lawrence imagined it when he wrote about humans “sitting with our tails curled while the machine amuses us, the radio or film or gramophone. Monkeys with a bland grin on our faces”

McFarlane carried a chocolate cake "from a kosher bakery in Tel Aviv" when they flew to Tehran to meet the strict Islamic leaders in secret last May, according to the report of the presidential commission that investigated the Iran- contras scandal. The cake, a participant told the commission, was offered as a token of good will, but was "more of a joke than anything else" between former NSC staff member Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North and Iranian middleman Manucher Ghorbanifar, who had arranged the visit. The cake and several other items given to the Iranians during the arms sale negotiations have been the subject of confused and conflicting reports since the operation's disclosure last fall.

From the first, Horkheimer’s romantic liaison was wedded to his burgeoning social criticism - something that found expression in the novellas he wrote during the First World War. In one, entitled Spring, a young student leaves his wealthy parents for a woman from a nearby village with whom he has fallen in love. They walk to a hilltop chapel, past a vagrant whom the woman knows and fears. Inside the chapel, they try to keep thoughts about the impoverished man from ruining their romantic bliss. But he appears in the pulpit and delivers a sermon about injustice, which upsets the couple. He then approaches them and says: 'I feel sorry for you, you now know the truth … But it is not enough to take off the rose-tinted glasses and then to stand there confused and helpless. You have to use your eyes and learn to walk in the colder world. Intoxicate yourselves and praise every minute that you spend without being conscious, for consciousness is terrible; only Gods can possess it clear and undistorted and still smile.’ The religion of love, then, that the young student took as replacement for the religion of his parents in which he could no longer believe, is itself insufficient in a world that is unjust.
