When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things. -Mary Oliver

This is a picture of Manzanar, a national historic site where people of Japanese heritage including American citizens were interned during WWII. A massive failure of humans and civil rights.

Taken just a month ago.

We visited the Manzanar Nat’l historic site last week, under the forbidding gaze of 14,000 ft peaks of the eastern Sierra. A sobering reminder that we’ve seen internment camps in this country before and it is a shameful, shameful memory.
