Not even close a good analogy. The veto right is important and truly is useful. You HAVE to listen to the smaller countries otherwise the internal balance of the union would be uneven. The whole point of the EU is that the larger states do not get to steamroll the smaller ones.

You are getting 1000 Panssari Sisu APCs.

Patria is restarting artillery gun production and already is making PaSi APC's.

Pretty much yes. Same with NAMMO (a munitions factory). These are the legacy of the first half of the last century: SAKO (White guard Weapon & Machine workshop) is the largest rifle manufactorer in Europe and is owned by beretta. Patria is the heir to Tampella, VKT (State rifle factory) and VLT.

That's I guess the flaw of success, rarely is success with marginal gains "news worthy". People generally do not really notice how important some things are and take them for granted. I would not be suprised if americans soon find out they are no longer welcome in European countries.

Finland has the "Maakuntajoukot" basically Läntruppen. They are made up of volunteers from the already large reservist pool.

Yes, but for a lot of reasons it was treated differently during and after the war. For example Romania which also switched sides was effectively occupied, meanwhile Finland was never occupied by allied forces.

There was a much more clearer distinction between Finland and the other German allies. Finland never fully commited to the war. For example Mannerheim ruled out participating in the assault on Leningrad. The Soviet Union also accepted a finnish conditional surrender without a full post war takeover.

line so about a 90km advance. 3. Finnish foreign policy being a complete mess in the 1940's (and Mannerheim being an old friend of Churchill) the continuation war was officially a seperatewar with Finland as a co-belligerent.
February 17, 2025 at 11:53 AM
It's for complex reasons. 1. Nobody remembers this except locals and military history nerds, 2. It didn't achieve much, mostly the line halted at just barely past the 1938 border. For example in Operation Silberfuchs the germans managed to advance to 46 kilometers from their starting 1/2

Traditionally dictatorships with masses of disgrunteled, disillusioned war veterans dont mix well

It was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. The problem Weimar had was just the weakness of the central government. They were too weak to deal with the communists and then too weak to deal with the various right wing militias later on.

Yes, they were produced under license by VL and retired in 1944 after a little under 20 years of service.

The finnish airforce used basically everything that flew. In the picture there is a Blackburn Ripon IIF, delivering mail in the south of Finland.

My Greatgrandpa was a participant in the battle of Mäntyvaara. When the fighting was over 417 russians were dead... with 17 finns.

Just like the Talvisota. No training, no preparations, no shits given. Only possible outcome is massive casualties.
January 8, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Basically their economy is overheating while not actually producing more value.
January 8, 2025 at 11:50 AM
Also russia has both managed to have inflation and high intrest rates at the same time.

The people who I keep hearing this from are western europeans mostly. Either they dismiss it by for example NATO or they feel no need to militarize.

I would not accept the cost universal healthcare if 60% of the population is morbidly obese.

Its not about it can't change, it's about the process. In Europe generally the entire society takes the hit for the team. So for example we have an extensive public health innitiative, tighter food regulation for agriculture, more regulations on driving, much higher taxes on sugar, fat etc.

One of the scandals of the previous finnish government was that in 2022 there was a law proposal to basically forever brake any nurse strike "if it was necessary". Mind you this was the SDP government. You probably know it as well that food in Europe and the US tastes different for a reason.
