tech recruiting leader who thinks hiring sucks and wants to do something about it one post at a time
Watching everything blink out of existence on 18Fs GH has been very sad. It's like watching a car wreck in slow motion.

Let's all take a moment to acknowledge that yes, trump squashed required DEI efforts, but that doesn't mean hiring managers, recruiters, and HR managers have to stop hiring highly qualified women and people of color. We still have power over who we hire

I am very fortunate to have earned and my mother paid for 2 masters. My 1st job was at equifax in 1998, the hr director walked me out to my car, after my 4th interview. He peaked into my car, apologized for the various cans. HE said, all good, just making sure you didn’t have kids.

In 2004, I interviewed for a teaching position. The principal asked me how many kids I had. I answered. He asked if I was planning to have more —said he couldn’t afford to have another teacher out on maternity leave.

This is why women need protections, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Kudos to them, a lot of people are doing a lot of hand-wringing and not much else.
Three things that made me feel better today.

1. Our chief people officer said unequivocally that #Cribl continues to believe that hiring a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce is important to our current and future success.

I want to do things like this again.

I got to speak to our local LGBT Chamber about inclusive hiring practices and how to ensure you are being welcoming to trans and non-binary applicants.

I’m also hearing from people who had been offered a job with a start date in the future that have had their offers rescinded due to the hiring freeze put in place by the administration.

I have had three interviews where I have been ghosted by the hiring team come interview time....what the fuck.

Honestly, I think this is a very common experience. A lot of people are in "why even try" mode right now. There's so little hope and corporations have dialed up "robber barony" to 11 since the pandemic ended.

From a survey last year:

A Harris Poll from April found that even when employees did take time off, 60% said they struggled to fully disconnect from work, 86% said they would check emails from their boss, and 56% took work-related calls during their time off.
Unlimited PTO, in most cases, is a scam.

It sounds great, but in practice? It creates a culture where people feel guilty taking time off.

No structure. No guidance. Just an unspoken rule: “Take less, work more.”

It’s more a perk for the company than it is for you.

We must also ensure that we aren't spreading misinformation. Trump thinks his EOs have more power than they do. This issue will be litigated to hell (as it should). It is not now legal to discriminate in hiring and promotions, so don't preemptively give him more power than he has by claiming it so.

One of the things to note about corporate DEI folks is that they've been disappearing in tech organizations at an alarming rate the past few years as DEI became "less hip" and equity and inclusion programming was seen as divisive and not needed.

Unfortunately the problem here is that job postings tend to be ephemeral garbage in a sea of hiring.

💬 Nice design, but back button woes and misleading job results offer a less than stellar experience. 🥱

I don't know what my PFP should be yet. Maybe that will be a tomorrow journey.
