Trump’s 28-point peace plan with Russia “is misnamed,” @anneapplebaum.bsky.social argues. “It is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future.”

“Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.”

Tomorrow is both my dad's and my mom's yahrzeit. He died last year, after a very rough final few months, four years to the day after mom. Notre Dame pasted Army for him that night, which he would have enjoyed. It's been a helluva year to try to grieve and rebuild.

Not surprised, but disappointed to see Jesse Green using 'colorblind' in his NYT article today w/o any acknowledgement of the dated, problematic implications (to wit, erasure). Multicultural casting, Jesse, surely, in conversation with color conscious approaches.

🇺🇦President Zelenskyy: Dear Ukrainians! Remember that first day of the war. Most of us made our choice. The choice for Ukraine. Recall our feelings back then. What was it like? Dark, loud, heavy, painful. For many – terrifying. But the enemy did not see our backs running away. They saw our eyes”

Just one point. Nothing more to discuss.

This is pedagogical malpractice. Hear your students when they speak. Also, knock it off with the paternalistic consensual warranting; don't speak for them. INVITE THEM INTO DIALOGUE.

Friends, call your MoC. The Senate has passed S.J. Res 37—a joint resolution terminating the national emergency declared to impose duties on articles imported from Canada. Now we need Speaker Johnson to bring it to the floor for a vote. Ask you MoC to lobby him for a vote on this bill! #ElbowsUp

I have been building out class for the spring term: Scum & Villainy, a scene study class where we do a deep dive into characters who have crossed the moral event horizon, while also looking at some essays on evil, monster theory. Only 2 people have registered. Perhaps the world is too full of scum.

Thread.
The Epstein bill is headed to Trump’s desk as we speak.

So, what now? Well, a lot of panic, it seems. I have seen every single possible worst case scenario all over social media in the last hour, so let’s go through this step by step. My only request, read the whole thing before commenting.

Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

I have had interviews in hotel rooms, either sitting on the bed or with the bed awkwardly between the interviewer and myself.
If you are not in academia, you might not know this, but job interviews used to be held at conferences IN HOTEL ROOMS. Women candidates in a hotel room alone with often all-male committees. People sitting on beds! The horror stories I've heard.
I thing I sometimes thing about is that university departments were still doing job interviews in hotel rooms in the mid aughts

Just noting the irony of *all this* alongside Project 2025's claim that it will protect us all from "child predators and misogynistic exploiters of women." It's almost funny, if it wasn't so corrupt and disingenous and damaging to individuals as well as the culture writ large.
