Disappointing news out of Nebraska, where the University's Chancellor's Final Budget Reduction Plan continues to call for eliminating the Dept of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences - notably, against the recommendation of the university's Academic Planning Committee.

For the life of me I don’t understand going to the effort - time, money, everything - of running for Congress, winning, and then just rolling over. It makes no sense.

Telling residents to lower AC use instead of lowering data center electricity use during heat waves is the equivalent of telling us not to shower while industry & farmers w/Colorado River rights dump excess water in a drought.
Reminder: data centers and crypto should be first priority for load shed during peak days like this, not your AC

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

NSF Physics was cut by 85%, basically wiping out most of its capacity for supporting research.

NSF Astronomy was cut by 53%

Undergrad education was cut by 71% and research on learning by 79%

Graduate education was cut by 100% to ZERO.

The lag in funding extends far beyond D.E.I. initiatives, affecting almost every area of science: chemistry, computing, engineering, materials and more.

Universities are the real world! ASU is a massive economic driver for PHX metropolitan area, AZ & the nation. ASU graduated 21,000 students this year! More than 306,150 ASU grads work in AZ. ASU employs > 21,750 people (around 1/4 are faculty) & contributes $1.78-$2billion in state & local taxes
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

🧪💪I know folks are struggling to appeal #NSF grant terminations

I created a generic GD version of our team's response plan, including a draft appeal*, based on compiled guidance.

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
NSF has posted an “update on priorities.”

They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants.

And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent.

Pet peeve: I hate how often ppl claim “all the researchers will just move to Europe/Canada!” You vastly under-estimate how little money there is there vs the USA- and unless that changes ASAP this loss is just going to decimate global science, full stop. 🧪🔭

Texas is facing a measles outbreak now, but there are many states with far worse kindergarten vaccination rates.

And remember that in places like Idaho and Wisconsin, rates are likely even lower in rural counties.
