FontJit just graduated to v1.1.0! 🎓

You can now also tap into the loading with JavaScript, listening to promises and doing your computer programming based on how they resolve.

Still very lean at 743 bytes (minified and compressed, of course)

Type-X is back! Easily test your fonts on *any* website with this Chrome extension.

This was originally published about 5 years ago, but stopped working due to browser evolution. Now it's fixed, updated and ready to go!

I did some UX! ✊

I added a site-wide font size slider to the Wakamai Fondue bètà. It will change *all* font previews, even the ones that didn't have a font-size slider before!

Give it a spin and let me know what you think!

I'm trying out a new variable instance preview on Wakamai Fondue Bětâ.

Instead of the green/yellow wall of buttons, I simply preview all of the instances, including the line of CSS you'd need for them.

Check it out on wakamaifondue.com/beta/ and let me know what you think!

I just pushed a small change to wakamaifondue.com/beta/ to improve the OpenType feature previews.

I removed the randomized combinations as they weren't very useful and nobody seemed to like 'em. So the fondue now just shows *all* characters involved in the feature. Also, custom preview for `frac`!

My first real change to Wakamai Fondue's UI is to remove the donation button.

It never worked: people only donated twice, and only after I explicitly posted about it on social media, which felt like begging. All donations have been re-distributed to the amazing folks who contributed code! 💸

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: getting the fireworks in Lighthouse! 💖

The recent refactoring and improvements to the Wakamai Fondue beta paid off. Deliriously happy about this!!

2. Stop trying to be smart about the OpenType layout feature previews. This also seemed like a good idea at the time: take the characters involved in the feature and mix them up in an attempt to trigger the OpenType fearture. What was I thinking?!

Next up is addressing two annoyances:

1. Create a better overview of all the variable instances. The button-with-small-preview approach seemed good at the time, but meh. It becomes a wall of unparsable yellow.

I just updated wakamaifondue.com/beta/ again!

If your huge font was stalling the fondue, it should work now. I applied supercomputer voodoo programming (a.k.a. memoization) so it can better handle huge charsets.

It now parses this huge-ass 12MB font in 30 seconds on my machine!

This 5.25" floppy disk was stored in an uninsulated attic for the past 25 years, where the weight of the other disks made it bend over the diskbox edge.

It loaded with zero errors!

OId tech is awesome! 💖

I learned about the new CSS Overview tool dev tool from @ohhelloana.blog at #CSSDay and already fixed a stray font, duplicate colors, and merged a whole bunch of media queries \o/

I love how in 1981 the manual for a piece of Commodore PET software was just like "well, here's a commented dump of the 6502 machine language code for our program, knock yourself out" 💖

@ntim.bsky.social It was nice to meet you! Here's what I documented what happened 5 seconds after pressing the photo button, but can't tag the other two fine folks as I forgot their names. Good times!

I would like to take a moment to point out that, at #CSSDay, while captioning two days of highly specific talks with absurd information density levels (including Q&A and MC banter) at an ungodly early time, captioner @asignia.bsky.social found time to casually check social media and like posts!

Hip chunky display font, or faux bold?

Another thing I notice now: the closer the end of the 5.25" floppy era came in sight, the more budget brands appeared, which all used a lot less sturdy plastic. These disks *are* floppy!

Yet these disks still read perfectly fine. Thanks Budget Budget Budget Budget Budget Budget Budget Budget!

I love how absolutely trashed some of these disks look, and they still load fine. I only had a few disks with read errors.

It's fun to see the tags, the doodles, the short messages, the weird brands!
May 20, 2025 at 7:19 PM
These disks are from the early 90s, from a guy who swapped disks *a lot*. These things were sent all over Europe, by snail mail.

This one is a nice sample of what's in the disk box: some vague brand (Okano) with a tag from the sender (Calypso) and a DIY disk cover from the group Extend.
