Artists behind some of the most popular films of all time are also forging one of the most powerful organized resistances to AI.

With solidarity, class action lawsuits and strong legislation, they're fighting to protect their livelihoods, and pop culture, from big tech.

My latest:
How artists behind Marvel, Alien, and the Matrix movies are fighting AI
With solidarity, legislation, class action lawsuits, and a little help from Guillermo del Toro. Plus, the Luddite Renaissance continues, and I open the mailbag.

There is no clear answer to what constitutes “rigorous” science, nor “the scientific method”, each of these concepts needs to be decided in situ, by the scientists themselves, via nuanced judgement about what best suits their goals and situation.

The divide between art and science is a mistake | Ann C. Thresher
Ann Thresher argues that science is not about following a strict, algorithm-like method, but instead, like in art, is about making judgement calls and thinking creatively.

Years of repeated exposure to heatwaves may accelerate ageing, particularly among manual workers, rural residents and people from communities with fewer air conditioners, according to a study in Nature Climate Change. #medsky 🧪
Long-term impacts of heatwaves on accelerated ageing - Nature Climate Change
Ageing is linked to environmental factors. This study shows that although participants gradually adapted to heat over time, cumulative exposure to heatwaves had stable and adverse impacts on ageing, especially among manual workers, rural residents and those with limited air conditioning.

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:

Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

Currently reading Silent Spring (published 1962), so this story hits particularly hard. Of course we’ve moved on in 63 years, and novel chemicals are more regulated, but I guess we have scaled up everything dramatically so the problem is just as serious overall.
