Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have £40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

Great line in the comments:

“Giving up 4% of our GDP in return for ‘sovereignty’ and more migration from non-EU countries wasn’t a very smart move”

There is a direct line between Donald Trump trying to destroy the BBC and him excusing the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump hates the independent free press – whether in the US, Saudi Arabia or the UK. We will always defend it.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

These are the voters that Labour strategists have made very clear over a long period of time that they don't want any more, and it's a message that has now been heard

The government just keeps doubling down on the strategy that’s taken it to genuinely historical unpopularity ever harder.

The horse will be flogged until it sprints.

U.K. commentators still telling the EU what is and isn’t in the EU’s interests.
On another point, it’s unbelievable that the EU are asking for €6.5bn as an entry fee to access SAFE. Remember: this is a loan scheme. The Gov’t are willing to contribute to the costs of running it. But a €6.5 bn fee is so off the scale that it suggests some EU members don’t want UK in the scheme.
Thanks to the FT for quoting me on the Lords European Affairs Cttee report. But as I understand the outcome of the Brussels debate on money, a UK contribution to EU cohesion funds w’d only be sought for future access to the Internal Market, not for SPS/ETS deals. This is good news. t.co/8UqLZ7bGn4

Imagine an EU-wide government shut down in its 6th week leading to serious disruption of air traffic. We would not hear the end of it in Anglophone media.
Look forward to more grand declations about how Europeans must emulate an America whose government is in the sixth week of shutdown and now can't provide safe air travel

The resignations of Tim Davie and Deborah Turness must be an opportunity for the BBC to turn a new leaf, rebuild trust and resist those like Nigel Farage who want to destroy it

We must stand up for a strong, independent BBC, to stop Trump’s America becoming Farage's Britain.

This is exactly right. The U.K. Labour government clings to Boris Johnson’s red lines, and then wonders why it gets treated like Boris Johnson’s government.
as a Brit based in Brussels for 17 years David, there is only one side that needs a "Reset" and it's not the EU.

I cringe when I see brits throw the toys out of the pram like this.

The UK called the "brexit reset" summit in May and then refused to "reset" any brexit red lines from 2016.

Bonkers.

In France the reaction would have been thermonuclear.

Different countries, different tales.

Many in the UK will regret not fighting harder against the Johnson Brexit.

But when the French look back and return to médiocrités as president, I reckon they will regret having been so hard on M Macron

Once again, this isn’t journalism. It’s stroking the ego of a politician who’s done great national harm.
WhyTF should we take Farage seriously? Just because he wants power? Even more reason for ruthless scrutiny.
His track record is racist and ruinous. Any serious journalist would say so.

Even today, Rachel Reeves couldn’t bring herself to explain the consequences of Brexit. It’s like there’s £40bn of tax revenue she just pretends not to understand where it went.

Reeves has criticised a “rushed and ill-conceived Brexit”. How typical. Still can’t find the courage to criticise the concept itself. Still dishonest. Still not actually laying a path for growth.

So it's all a slap on the wrist for raping girls. He gets to keep the money, gets to keep being a Prince, and stays out of jail.
