Sebastião Salgado is my favorite photographer by a mile, and I'm so heartbroken to hear of his death.
If you're unfamiliar with his work, I highly recommend His books Genesis and Exodus which fiercely advocate for our precious natural world and our fellow humans who are displaced from their homes.

He was known for dramatic and unflinching black-and-white images of hardship, conflict and natural beauty.

Sierra Nevada, major mountain range of western North America, running along the eastern edge of the U.S. state of California. Its great mass lies between the large Central Valley depression to the west and the Basin and Range Province to the east. Extending more than 250 miles (400 kilometres) northward from the Mojave Desert to the Cascade Range of northern California and Oregon, the Sierra Nevada varies from about 80 miles wide at Lake Tahoe to about 50 miles wide in the south. Its magnificent skyline and spectacular landscapes make it one of the most beautiful physical features of the United States. Biologically, it is home to the largest trees in the world—the giant sequoias. As a recreation centre, its year-round facilities prove a magnet to the inhabitants of the huge urban areas of California, and it has considerable importance as a source of power and water. It was the focus of the celebrated California gold rush.

This very basic image focuses on the inner core branching of an old growth oak tree-- with its branches reaching out like many arms trying to grab the surrounding light, its longer branches reaching out beyond the edges of the frame. Below the trunk, dry summer grasses rise to the light. In the cloudy sky, the sun insists that its presence be noticed. But, again, the photo simply focuses on the branch structure of the old oak.

I think we all probably need to see some lovely horses at sunset today. Taken in south-east #Iceland in November 2020.
Almost silhouetted horses grazing on a small hillock. In the distance is a big steep hill off to the right, and the light is pure golden sunset light. Some patches of white are just visible on the horses.

People have lived here for about 12,000 years. The earliest inhabitants hunted and gathered in the wetlands, forests and floodplains. That lake was named for the Caddoan people. According to one legend, a Caddo chief’s failure to obey the Great Spirit caused an earthquake that created Caddo Lake. Spanish explorers first arrived in Texas in 1542. French explorers arrived in 1685. Both groups encountered the Caddo on the Red River in the late 1600s. The Caddo successfully traded and negotiated with the newcomers. The Caddo began to settle in the area near Caddo Lake around the 1800. They built ceremonial centers and maintained far-reaching trade routes. They hunted game with bows and arrows, fished, and farmed corn, beans and squash. But conflict arose between the Spanish and French over Caddo territory. American settlement from the east and attacks from neighboring Native tribes led to increased loss of Caddo territory by the middle 1800s. The United States government forcibly moved the Caddo to Oklahoma in 1859.
