The other day I wondered why my salt said "iodized" on it so I googled it. Turns out iodine deficiency, which is real nasty, affects 2 billion people worldwide. Adding iodine to salt solves that problem for only $0.05/person/yr! Pretty hard to organize that sort of thing without a government though.
