The trivialization of women exists as an ongoing, malevolent belittling: whatever is consistently and without opposition declared to be irrelevant – like so much that women experience– loses its language; perhaps it may echo for a while within a person, but it creates no response.

An instructive exercise on the religious divide in America today. Go to Google News and search on Catholic immigration & scroll through all the stories on Catholics opposing Trump's immigration policies. Now do the same for Southern Baptist immigration and see virtually nothing.

Amazon announced 14,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $40M last year.

UPS announced 48,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $24M last year.

Intel announced 20,000 layoffs. Its new CEO's pay package is valued at nearly $69M.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

Standing up to a tyrant - who is willing to impose pain as leverage to compel loyalty or acquiescence - is hard. You can convince yourself that yielding stops the pain and brings you back to "normal".

But there is no "normal". Submission emboldens the tyrant. The threat grows.

The 1930s taught us what appeasement gets you: a stronger enemy and a weaker democracy. Some of today’s Dems still haven’t learned it. You don’t bargain with extremists holding people’s livelihoods hostage. You hold the damn line. #HistoryRepeats

In response to this claim that the "strategy didn't work."

The people were on our side. We were building momentum to help save our democracy. We could have won - the premium increase notices were just starting.

And giving in now will embolden him. Things will likely get worse.

How my brain works:

1. Discover that today is both Reformation Day and Hallowe'en.

2. Wonder if anyone carves Martin Luther pumpkins in celebration; discover that they do (www.uu.edu/news/release...).

3. Nerd-snipe self by wondering what leading theologian Linus Van Pelt would make of this.
‘Luther-o-lantern’ a fitting Reformation Day gift
Union University Christian studies professor Ray Van Neste got an unusual gift on Halloween from three of his students – a “Luther-o-lantern.”

This time of year: just listened from beginning to end Simon and Garfunkel’s masterpiece: ‘Bookends.’ Every track perfect in its own way- Paul’s incredible guitar work, lyrics, Art’s vocals, never better. What a gift to its listeners.
