Right on right war, part 2:

Groupers are anti-gay but many of them - such as Nick Fuentes - are fine with femboys, "men, usually cisgender, who express themselves with traditionally feminine behaviors." Here is a clip on Groypers and femboys.

Right on right war, part 1:

Groypers follow Nick Fuentes and disagree with Kirk in at least two ways: Fuentes is less tolerant of 1/ gays and 2/ Israeli - he is a holocaust denier.

Clip below, but look at the YouTube comments to see the heat.

A man from Utah grows up Mormon and kills a rightwing political commentator.

When does the left enter the story?

Even surmising a trans lover doesn't do it because if there is a trans lover, she too is from a conservative family in Utah.

When does the left enter the story?

Right on right crime.

I have a draft of my article on Hume on Free Will - really Hume on necessity and liberty. If you are willing to read it and comment, send me your email address in a DM.

Anyone know of work being done on manipulation and explanation - specifically, the application of explanation theory to the manipulation argument?

Looks like the alternatives (who were honestly probably overwhelmed during the big push to leave Substackj) actually do have tools to help, and others have offered as well.

Lots of good links in the thread if you're in a similar boat.
I’m still looking to move my newsletter, but I need some assistance. Substack has an edge here because they have staff that helps set everything up for tech idiots like me.

When I asked for help at alternatives like Ghost and Buttondown, they just pointed me to their DIY page and, ha ha, no.
substack just announced a new enterprise media offering (whatever that means) in partnership with bari weiss’ website “because of its commitment to pursuing high-integrity journalism.”

if you’re still publishing there, it’s time to get the fuck out.

I have no effective way of dealing with DMs. My current strategy is to just say "I don't like to DM, and I'm very old."

Any advice? I'm married, so I'm not here to meet people, but what are the odds that you'll meet a beautiful woman who contacts you via DM on Bluesky, or that it is even a person?
December 17, 2024 at 3:58 PM
There is a kind of woman who doesn't have any posts, doesn't have a lot of followers but follows a lot of people, likes to ask questions via DM but prefers other venues, is possibly a bot, etc.

Anyway, there are more of these kind of women-bots on Bksy than X.

The Moorean argument for metaphysics.
Here is metaphysics.

And here is metaphysics.

Therefore, metaphysics is real.

I'm turning 66 tomorrow, and as a number 66 is better than 65. 65 is old. When I think of 65 I think of Rubber Soul which is not the best album of the Beatles.

66 is Revolver. Also, a famous US highway. And it just gets better, at least for a while.

67 Sgt. Peppers
68 The White Album
69 Abbey Road

What do you think of this argument?

Anyone working on Hume or the history of free will?

Which arguments for incompatibilism were around when Hume lived? Were there versions of the consequence argument?

I'm particularly interested in arguments starting from assumptions about causal necessity as a kind of tie between material objects.

The multiverse is unscientific nonsense | Jacob Barandes
Everyone from physicists like Michio Kaku to Marvel superheroes propagate the idea of the multiverse - an infinite set of parallel universes. But Jacob Barandes argues that any talk of multiverses is…

Here is my hangup with BlueSky: it is the anti-twitter for philosophy, a running away from twitter. Why can't we reclaim X, make it become twitter again? We are philosophers, damn it, we should be able to do that. And I promise you once you get BlueSky to where X was, someone will buy it.

Discuss.

Theorem: Nothing is morally wrong per se. Things are only right or wrong in context, once the full circumstance is taken into account (Hume).

Corollary: If something were morally wrong per se, it would not be abortion.

This is my new thought about metaphysics: it is like color.

There is a sense in which metaphysics isn't real - you can make almost any idea consistent with almost any metaphysics by bending one or the other - but you couldn't distinguish much without it. It makes any knowledge we do have possible.

I really liked No Hard Feelings, and I love this version of Maneater, originally done by Hall & Oates. Makes you realize what a great song that is. Just a change in context perfectly captures contemporary young male angst - just like the original version did.

We lack free will means either we lack the specific ability to do otherwise, or we are not the origins of our actions.

Both are suggested since causes have effects preceding the agent.

Yet no one who gives advice (Sapolsky) thinks we lack control over the future.

How is no free will a solution?
