This is such an important piece. What's happening to film criticism - and so quickly - is deeply saddening.

I get it.
As a young man in 1980s West Bromwich, being teetotal made me an absolute freak of nature. As a student, it was even worse. Struggling with an alcohol-dominant culture crops up a lot in my memoir of that time.

Dickens makes me laugh. In Bleak House, milquetoast Mr. Snagsby is under the formidable thumb of Mrs Snagsby. In the two words, 'unchallengeable reality', the author tells us so much about the poor man's life.
