Nearly 400 books have been purged by the Naval Academy's library. Adolf Hitler is still there. Maya Angelou isn't.
Do Pete Hegseth really think these cadets can't handle the truth?
Who’s In and Who’s Out at the Naval Academy’s Library? (Gift Article)
An order by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office resulted in a purge of books critical of racism but preserved volumes defending white power.

I was dismayed when I first saw the harsh critique of NPR. thanks to Steve Inskeep, I know that a lot of it was in error. Room for better journalism, of course. That’s always true. but not what was painted. open.substack.com/pub/steveins...
How my NPR colleague failed at “viewpoint diversity”
Uri Berliner gave a perfect example of the kind of journalism he says he’s against.

I read that Canada's per capita GDP is about the same as Alabama's, but Canadians are a lot better off than Alabamians (and happier, too). The reason, the benefits of that GDP is spread more equally across the country, not concentrated in the hands of a few rich people.
Our economy is far larger than it was decades ago.

Where have most of the gains gone? To the top.

Any path forward must include a fight to restructure the economy toward more widely shared prosperity.

This isn’t a blue state vs. red state phenomenon. It’s a class phenomenon.

"Then they came for the historians, but I did not speak out, because I am not a historian."
Well, no more. And in a larger sense, NO MORE!
Rewriting the parts of history that make you uncomfortable is just plain ORWELLIAN!

This Trump executive order is a racist, sexist attack on the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Women’s History Museum and the true purpose of history: to tell the truth about our past.
It is straight out of Orwell.

In these dark days we could do with a bit of encouragement, and a reminder that it takes effort to rebuild.
Folk singer Stan Rogers has a song about sailors who salvaged a good ship.
I especially love the last verse. It could have been written about us.

Parhelia, also known as sun dogs, bracket the rising sun in Cadillac MI on Monday 20 January 2025. Sun dogs form when hexagonal ice crystals drift in the air, letting light refract through the long side of the crystals. That gives the rainbow effect and sets the 22-degree angle from the sun.

Remember, today especially, that MLK said America suffers not just from "the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people." Keep the faith. Keep up the fight.

So the bitcoin people are betting on the USA creating a cryptocurrency reserve, like the strategic oil reserve. I don't get it. Oil is a real thing that is vital to industry and defense needs. Crypto ... isn't.
Why don't we establish a strategic tulip bulb reserve? Makes about as much sense.

Why do so many feel like they've fallen behind?

It's not because of immigrants, trans people, the “deep state,” or any other bogeyman trotted out by the GOP.

It's because big corporations and billionaires have rigged markets and siphoned off most of the economy's gains

Trump wants to cut the corporate tax rate to 15%. This would give...

-The 5 largest banks a $4.1B tax cut
-The 5 largest drug makers a $3.1B tax cut
-The 5 largest US oil companies a $2.5B tax cut
-The 5 largest grocery stores a $1.7B tax cut

Some populist, huh?
