The flock has 17 turkeys right now, out for a browse together. Today they mostly traveled in a line, so I couldn't get all in one video still but I could get an accurate count. Rewiliding this yard continues to have lots of benefits for wildlife diversity.

8 turkeys browse for food as they stroll into the woods. Open space on the edge of boreal forest, approx. 1cm of snow is on the ground but patchy. A chair and bucket are in the background. A concrete hole cover is in the left foreground. 8 turkeys are browsing for food. 6 are close to the camera, including 5 hens or jakes that are right around the concrete hole cover, where there was a lot of goldenrod and other seed-making weeds this Fall. The logistics of this have been a RIDE.
Like it started with this generous teacher who put out a call for help for her class and this guy she knew from college was like, "Sure. I can put some food in my Hyundai Elantra."

Now there are volunteers, a foundation, and Costco lore.

Timeline cleanse! Here is a Shiba Inu with a thousand yard stare (drugs) in a recovery suit. He's fine - he was neutered today. His coat is so dense and plush that he had to be sized up to a (slightly too long) large suit. Apparently, unlike children's clothes, "husky" sizing was not available.
A Shiba Inu, red with white eyebrows and a white face is standing on a towel on a truck seat, staring just to the left of the camera, eyes slightly closed. One foreleg has a visible shaved spot that shows easily 50% more fur than could be expected on a dog. He is wearing a turquoise "recovery suit" that covers his chest and is down his front legs similar to a cap-sleeved t-shirt. His head and neck including a prominent face ruff and a neck roll (fur) are visible above the markedly snug "suit". Even for Shibas, he has an exceptional coat of fur. This is the dog equivalent of putting 10 pounds in a 5 pound bag.

My food pantry gets a lot of ground pork and, this time of year, cabbages. I present the *choose your own protein* version of Egg Roll in a Bowl!
GRATE (or buy 2 bags coleslaw mix): 2 carrots (1 1/2 cups) (about 2 medium-sized carrots) 1 medium sized cabbage (8 cups) 1 in fresh ginger (or tsp ground in sauce) CHOP (or grate because it's already dirty!) 1 onion, diced 2 cloves/1 tbs garlic COMBINE IN BOWL: 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tsp Sriracha (TBS in my house) 2 tbs soy sauce or tamari 1 tbs brown sugar 1 tbs rice vinegar 1/2 tsp five spice powder (if available) COOK: 1 lb ground pork, chicken, turkey or 1 block crumbled tofu or 4-6 eggs, scrambled* or a combination of proteins In your largest saute pan or widest pot: Saute pork/tofu until cooked, set in bowl with sauce. Saute onion until translucent. Add garlic, cook for another 30 seconds Add shredded veggies, add lid, let it cook until cabbage is wilted. *If using eggs, push the cabbage blend to the side and scramble in the pan now* Add the protein and sauce into the pan. Stir gently to combine everything. Serve! Garnish with spring onions or wonton strips or sesame seeds or anything else that sounds good.

One of my favorites for a crock pot or pressure cooker - pumpkin turkey "chili"
For Crock Pot or Instant Pot/Pressure Cooker 2 lb ground turkey 1/2 tsp olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp chili powder, to taste 2 bay leaves 1 1/2 tbsp cumin 1 tsp oregano 2 15 oz cans white northern or navy beans, rinsed and drained (3.5 cups cooked beans from dried) 15 oz can pumpkin puree (or pureed butternut, acorn, or kabocha) 1 4.5 oz can chopped green chiles 2 cups chicken broth kosher salt and pepper to taste chopped cilantro, red onion, or chives for topping Heat a large heavy saute pan over medium heat (or IP on Saute) and add oil. Add meat and cook, breaking it up until white, about 5 minutes.  Add onions, garlic, sauté about 3 - 4 minutes; add cumin and sauté another minute. Put in to crock pot (or leave in IP) Add beans, pumpkin puree, green chilis, broth, chili powder, oregano, and bay leaves. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours. (25 minutes in IP) Remove bay leaves and adjust seasoning to taste.

I used to have a TV buddy, Memphis the Orange, who particularly liked police procedurals. Then he moved to be with his human and my lap has been empty UNTIL TONIGHT!

Turns out Scooter has taste. I fired up @audacityofdespair.bsky.social's documentary, The Wire, and he happily joined me.
A brown tabby cat is lying down my blanket-covered legs so he can watch TV over my (not visible) feet. On the TV is Stringer Bell saying, "We do worse and we get paid more." An orange cat lies lengthwise, down my legs. The cat's head is positioned to watch the TV (indoor shot of High Potential, dialogue not visible). My legs are covered in a loose blue fleece blanket and I'm wearing woolen clogs. It was February.

Tonight Scooter was being very cute. I realized that most of the pictures I've taken lately have been of this cat and I'm not sad but, as someone with sled dogs, I am a little embarrassed. It's not like I was anti-cat before, but it was like, "Aw, cute," and then I moved on. Now I'm changed.

The brown tabby is now on his back with three of four feet in the air towards the camera, remaining front paw on his toy (an old gym sock filled with stuffing and some catnip). He is looking at the camera wondering when you're going to make a play for the sock.

There's so much wrong with this entire concept but I'm would like to share the *notably still made of wood and babiche* - 1944 snowshoes issued to the US Army 10th Mtn Div - a bearpaw design.

Two wooden snowshoes sit up against a wall. They are a wide oval of wood, slightly wider at the top (front of foot) than at the bottom, a slightly elongated "bearpaw" design. There are two wooden cross-braces that effectively divide the shoe into three sections - the middle being the largest by more than half. The shoe is laced with fine, narrow babiche at the front in a web-like pattern that runs through tiny holes in the curved frame and cross brace. In the rear, it again weaves through the cross brace, but is lashed around the oval in the rear. The middle section has wide, sturdier babiche that is easily 1/4 inch thick and wraps around the frame and cross-braces in a star pattern that is then twisted before wrapping around the cross bracing at front and rear. On the sides, it is knotted before wrapping around the frame. Unusually (for a snowshoe) the binding is a metal bar and plate that is nailed to the shoe and then riveted to leather to attach to a boot with standard laces and a heel strap. This is designed to have the wearer's toe on the plate which will then pivot on the bar as they raise their heel.

For #invertefest, one of my favorites, that I recently learned is considered a rare find by some folks - the Luna Moth. I love their fuzzy antennae. (This is a male - they have very distinct sex differences and I seem to spot more males than females around my yard.)
A luna moth sits on a birch tree. Its primary wings are primarily lime green but have a distinct pink ridge and eyespots at the top. It has hindwings that almost look like a pair of curved tails or narrow maple tree seeds - an indicator that this is a male. It has frilled antennae that are pale yellow with a pink center "stem" (males have bushier antennae too). Its legs are also pink.

Sometimes you stand alone to make things happen later, like this stack of wheat straw that my Southern farmer nephew tells me will be left for months to moulder in the weather before it becomes mushroom beds.
An enormous stack of wheat straw stands mouldering in a field of late soybeans. The large, long bales weigh thousands of pounds each, but because nothing is close by, it's hard to grasp the scale. This stack is probably 10 feet tall and 20 feet square.

Had to change the way the rear is strapped after THREE catastrophic failures in NJ and NY. Now I'm using the emergency tube socks* to protect the truck and tires from the brass ratchet mechanism.

*Dry socks, mittens, and now strap & ratchet protectors!
A truck is on a car trailer. There is a giant yellow strap around the trailer, in front of the tires, and then it disappears under the vehicle frame. You can't see the big brass toothed ratched because the toe of a tube sock is over it to protect the wheel of the truck from the mean teeth and pointy parts. The red and black top of the sock is visible on the strap, but you can't see what that part is protecting.

First up was I-295, a goddamn delight. Nobody was on it, apparently preferring the more narrow NJ TPK. Then we got on Route 1, which brought us past the hospital of House MD, UMC Princeton in Plainsboro (now Penn Med Princeton Medical Center).
Large building of steel and glass sits on a slight hill shrubbery in foreground adds to the idea that it is lofty. On one concrete face is the Penn Shield and under that it says Princeton.

May I recommend instead A Thousand Ships, which is a retelling of the Trojan War with Calliope as a main narrator? Terrific.

Went to the Eye-talian place in town to celebrate the nephew. Desperately wanted the "Lemon Cello Cake" but had to skip because we had birthday cake at home. But I did get to spend hours thinking about lemon cellos.

I will *never* not flinch when I see a ship crossing the Chesapeake Bay tunnel when I'm on the bridge. Like I know I'm going to go under and there will not be a bridge strike but it just gives me the yikes. I believe this is the USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) based on Thimble Shoals Shipwatching on YT.
A US Navy ship is approaching the tunnel crossing from the right. It looks like it is steaming into a bridge. It is not. US Navy ship is dead ahead despite this photo being taken from a car that is definitely on a bridge. A Subaru is in the foreground and there are road lights and a construction crane also cluttering things up.

Unlike so many others, this business is still going strong and has refreshed their sign. My understanding is this is owned by a racist old white guy and cash only.
Peace Token Cigarettes. It's sign is a truly enormous Native American in a large feathered headdress. Under that are much smaller signs noting "Ammo Sold Here" and "Hand rolled cigars". On the ground are yard signs with various brands and prices per carton. On the building is a sign advertising FIREWORKS. The parking lot has at least 5 customer cars.

I saw a spotted lanternfly! I'm sorry, I was unable to do my civic duty to Delaware and stomp it - it was on my tire and then disappeared in a flash after I got a photo.

But now I know what they look like with my own eyes and will be prepared in the future.
A spotted lanternfly is sitting on a tire. The lanternfly's wings as folded are a base of buff with a blush pink undertone and grey ribs. It is spotted an irregular black on the top two thirds and then abruptly changes to a dappled stripe for the bottom third.

Look at this cute deer mouse that The Boy caught *by hand* yesterday while we were doing an unexpected erosion control project. We moved her ~4 feet to outside the fence so she will be safe from the dogs (and, more immediately, the wheelbarrow of gravel).
A deer mouse in being released on the ground by a hand in tan and grey work gloves. The mouse is grey with big white feet and a tail that is much longer than her body. She is being released outside a welded wire fence in an area of mixed low-growing plants.

The Princess of Darkness (Jinx) is hunting but consented to being included by ignoring me instead of swatting at me. Scooter is helping with mouse patrol. Meanwhile, Aether is snoozing with the Betsys Ross at the top of the cat tree, no cares in the world.

A brown and white Siamese-Maine Coon cross is curled in a ball. One white paw is supporting his head and is facing the camera. His tail is dangling down making the slightest swish motion at the tip. Jose sounds amazing. Scooter says everyone needs a Jose in their life. Someone who helps and encourages you to be the best you can. (Despite having 5 dogs we adopted Scooter several months ago for complex reasons and he just wants to be near me, no cuddles, which is *perfect*.)

He is up on one shoulder, looking at the camera with interest but his rear feet are kicked out as if he was just lying on his side a moment ago. There is a tan, quilted pad on the recliner to help keep it clean. It doesn't reach to the bottom so his body isn't on the pad but his feet are because he's polite and helpful like that. A rainbow braided wool rug is in the background on a reddish brown wood floor.
